The Sun Peeks In

by
Alyssa Becker

The Sun Peeks In is inspired by the many moments we enjoy throughout our lives. Life sends you both blessings and challenges. Hopefully you are blessed with more bright spots in your life, but difficult times do come along. Through my haiku, my goal is to paint a picture of optimism and remind you all that no matter what life throws at you, the sun will peek back in again. Now, take a journey through your childhood, love stories, challenging days, and simple things in life. Read these haiku and reflect on your own life. Read them once slowly. Then read them once more to connect them to experiences you have had. Finally, take them with you. Let the haiku open your mind, your senses, and your heart to new experiences and the world around you.

About the Author

Alyssa Becker was born in 1995 in Southern Illinois and grew up in the small rural town of Red Bud, Illinois. She has one younger brother, but has a large extended family who often gathers at her grandmother's farmhouse on Sundays to play cards and visit with each other. She currently resides in Decatur, IL and is a senior studying Elementary Education and Special Education at Millikin University. Many of her haiku are written about simple moments and experiencing life with the people and nature surrounding you. While she loves sports and spending time with her friends and family, she receives most of her inspiration through experiences teaching children and spending time outdoors. Alyssa leaves you with these three things to take with you in life: keep an open mind, be thankful for both the blessings and challenges in life, and “Let your smile change the world, but don’t let the world change your smile.”

laying in the grass
the clouds
turn into elephants

snoozing on Grandma’s couch
the sun peeks in
to invite me outside

one path in the trees
I look down
at my own two feet

my brush slips
when I see her smile
I leave the flaw

family cafe
where everybody knows your name
foreclosed

laying on my dented pillow
I sweep my palm
over the void in my bed

every time a bell rings
I am reminded
of your wings

Little Eddie
wears that same holey shirt
Monday thru Friday
