Golden Eyes

by
Douglas Sherrill

My name is Doug Sherrill, and I'm a pre-vet student at Millikin University. I wasn't really much of a poet, and I've never really had a penchant for it, but I've always enjoyed reading poetry. That's why I decided to take the course on haiku here at Millikin, and honestly, it's a choice I'm glad I made. I've enjoyed so much of it, and I've done things that I never thought I could. My haiku are a means for me to branch out to the people around me and to express myself and my appreciation for what's around me.

we carry the mountain
crumbs trail behind

unable to sleep
I stand up
golden eyes

the stars
so beautiful
I stir my beans

her silhouette
in the sunset
which is more beautiful?

a night walk
talking to the moon
bouncing back ideas

on the porch
watching myself
chase fireflies

he swings
the hammer
red steel

sound of the river
a lullaby
I miss

distant howl
ehcoes off the moon
not too lonely out here

they blink out
pair by pair
I start a fire

a winter chill
limping to the field
coach says I'm done

I notice
the prettiest leaves
are all on the ground
