Hide & Seek

by
Austin Taylor

The title of this haiku collection is "Hide and Seek" for a couple of reasons. First, many of my haiku are childish and fun just like a classic game of hide and seek. This is most likely me wanting to bring joy and a smile to the reader's face. Next, I enjoy writing haiku that contain a "hidden", deeper message that the reader must seek. I want the reader to apply the haiku meaning into their life to fully understand it.

My best haiku originate from noticing little details of things that seem out of place or silly. I believe the best haiku come when you are not thinking of writing haiku. The words, feelings, and thoughts flow freely and the haiku seeks the author instead.

Spring frost
my pepper plant
        got a little chili

on an old stump
moist green moss
tickles my soft feet

sunning himself on a rock
a turtle slides in the pond
leaving his best friend

still hooked on my shirt
slimy fish scent
reminds me of the vacation

microbiology lab
I rub my tired eyes
with contaminated hands

tempurpedic pillow
sinking deeper
into thought

parachuting through the sky
little army spiders
in a gust of wind

thinking of how far
            we've come
                     old running shoes

chilly Sunday morning
            get out of bed
            only for a tinkle

returning home
from a busy day of classes
dirty dishes

hand in our candy bowl
my witch-of-a-mother scolds me
fake wart

Halloween night
a brave ghost approaches
the house on the corner

patiently waiting
for a slight nibble or pull
wishing papa was here

Turkey day
my grandfather calls dibs
on the gizzard

whip cream tower
slowly melting on the
        warm pumpkin pie
