A Little Girl's Wish

suburban evening
the distant sound
of a dog's bark

The child at the playground
separated from his mother

A woman on a bench
lectures her daughter—
texting

connected more than ever
yet the distance continues to grow

the moon peaks out
the night begins
as the wind picks up

Dancing in the
kitchen, Mom and Dad

they share laughs
as he twirls
the one he loves

brother and sister
welcoming the new puppy

birthday cake
with a piece already
missing

sitting on the empty road
uneaten

driving
to an unknown
destination

The dog still barks
no matter what

dark matter
as we stargaze
starless night

I count the stars
trying to make
the time pass

little sister
crossing her fingers
for a wish

she opens her eyes
checking under her pillow

no money,
cherry blossom petals
from the fairy

she runs to mom
crying
