Tiptoe

by
Sydney Rudny

Intro

The title “Tiptoe” comes from my signature haiku in this collection. Often, when we are little we stand on our tiptoes just to be able to watch our personal heroes and for me, my parents were my heroes growing up. Haiku is about snapshotting those little or big moments in life that mean most. In this collection, all the haiku reflect the moments in life that have really stuck with me.

antique car
roof is off
the road is open

I pull back the curtain
a bright white blanket
makes me smile

the chilling wind
of a fall night
I scoot closer to you

dad’s 50th birthday
he tells everyone
he’s turning 29

across the room
he gives her a wink
it’s the little things

she leans in
for a kiss
he goes for the hug

little girl
up on her tip toes
watching dad

he rubs my head
I close my eyes
and fall asl . . .

I stop and stare
at the dried-up leaves
fallen soldiers

mud clings to our shoes
retracing
the soldiers’ steps

cool summer night
the band walks on stage
the crowd roars
