Potpourri

by
Betty Hartnett

The topics of my haiku vary from nature to my family and everyday events, hence; it is a potpourri of haiku. The Global Haiku class has expanded my awareness of the haiku that has been written, especially of the American haiku. I’ve read more haiku these past several days than I have in my lifetime. I feel I have also improved my skills in writing haiku and am better able to edit my work. I’m not sure of the direction I will take in continuing with my haiku, but I feel that I am able to go forward as a stronger and more confident writer.

jilted . . .
     I go to the beach
          to be with the sun

she stops traffic . . .
    mama duck
leading her babies

        that evening
        we danced . . .
the sleeveless black dress

  meditation . . .
      I let go
images of you

 after the divorce . . .
 my wedding dress
in the dress-up trunk

an old photograph . . .
     my mother with long hair
          so young

the last ornament
now back in the box . . .
Christmas is over

the Lincoln Home . . .
I touch the stair rail
     he touched

5K race she pulls him through the finish line

shopping for a dress
     the flower girl cries
          when she can't wear red

I watch your face
as the tall blond
     bounces by

she shows no emotion
     as the doctor says . . .
                    mastectomy

each time I talk
     with my step-mother . . .
          her voice more frail

always          mom
      put on her glasses
               to talk on the phone
