Watching Dreams Fly

by
Samantha Bies

The title of this collection of haiku is Watching Dreams Fly. The reason that I chose to name the collection this is due to my basic creative muse. I am a fan of dreams, and for the most part I find that I am the most creative in my dreams. I get my inspirations from what I see in my dreams. They are vivid and full of color.

In my haiku I try to bring out the vivid colors of dreams. I find that I am the most interested in haiku that can't paint an image in my head so I work so that the readers of my haiku are able to see an image of their own. Almost like their own dream. Dreams are never the same and I would like my haikus to be interpreted differently as well.

I had not had much introduction to haiku before taking my global haiku class at Millikin University. This class showed me that everyone has their own type of haiku. They not only have their own type, but all have a specific type that they enjoy. I hope that my haiku can reach the minds of many different people and that they enjoy the images that they can paint from reading the haiku.

the angel—
stuck in stone
watching dreams fly away

in the fresh snow
a lonely set of footprints
continue with no end

her little dress
touches the ground
to pick up a yellow dandelion

the dragon beside him
natural smoke rising
in the cold air

look! look!
thrusting his hand
into the pond

lifting her on his back
sprinting to the lake
falling backward

a tan-renga

shopping for a dress
the flower girl cries
when she can't wear red

Betty Harnett

prancing down the aisle
a ruby bow in her hair

sheets cover the ground
the small prints
disappear at the fence
