summer air
spreads
my lover's ashes

Kailey Lyons

This just has me picture someone whos lover left them and it was at the beginning of summer. Summer is a joyful time and makes for spending time with family and friends but this time they cannot. So they grant the lovers last wish and lets the summers air take them and spread them even further. Christian Zenon, January 2019

This haiku takes to a movie scene, where these two individuals are at the end of their road together because one past away. One lover wants to give the other something special. So, she takes her lover ashes to a beach as the wind is flowing and scatter his ashes. The wind is blowing the ashes into the ocean, making the remains of her lover’s ashes forever alive as long as the ocean never runs dry. Taron Jones

The reason this a good haiku is because this takes me back to sneaking out the house and thinking I'm getting away. But, here come mom letting think I'm getting away, to catch me shortly after I thought I got away. It also, makes you think that you snuck out properly, and is returning home. You take your clothes off, switch clothes, and proceed to lay in the bed but here comes mom. She knew you went out, let you think everything is okay and is now either questioning you or giving you a whooping. Taron Jones

the big bad wolf
not so tough now
bullied

Taron Jones

This plot twist to a fairy tell spoke to me immediately. The analogy tied to the classic story of Red Robin Hood was really well written. The karma seems to always catch up to the bully, hopefully that is. For years this big bad wolf would pick on others, due to his or her own insecurities. As years pass he has lost several friends, no one wanting to be his victim any longer. He now falls victim to the bullying. In a way this is too bad, I wish either party would be mature enough to move on and suggest mending this relationship into a friendship. However, for the Haiku’s sake, it was well written. Maggie Comerford, January 2019

alcohol poisoning
ginger ale

Tyvon Johnson

I chose my own because when writing the haiku I thought about the last time I really enjoyed myself at party here at Millikin University. No one died or jumped off any buildings. Then the alcohol poisoning reminds me of a night of a big party and not knowing my limits and drinking too much. Von Johnson, January 2019

This I feel like it was written from pain and personal experience. This just brings me back to memories and things I’ve experienced. I feel an array of feelings with this one and I don’t want to get to into I but it really hits home. Christian Zenon, January 2019

This Haiku has tied in nicely with others we have read previously. I picture a less athletic child anxiously awaiting for the sun to shine and to ride his bike to the park. The first one there he waits for other neighborhood friends to join. Once everyone has arrived and they chose the game of the day they line up to pick teams. Unfortunately this giddy little boy is picked last due to his size and athletic disadvantage. Nonetheless this does not effect the large heart this boy has. He plays on with a fantastic attitude. This Haiku was short and simple yet spoke to me. Often times these are the athletes that are overlooked. What we don’t realize that is important to sports is the heart, attitude, and work ethic. I enjoyed this one because it made me think about my younger childhood days. With me having to move out of my hometown to better myself coming back on holidays everything is just different. Some of the houses we use to play in were gone and there were a lot of new faces. Von Johnson, January 2019

one chain
two necks
slavery

Tyvon Johnson

I can hear the chains and pictures I have seen in history books popped up when I read this haiku. I heard the screams of the children and the smell of the sweat in this scene. I also like how the haiku got broader as it went on. We start with the one chain that connects two people and this represents the topic of slavery as a whole, which as we know is a very broad topic.
