listening to the whispers Taron Jones I see a woman outside listening to the howling of the wind as it blows through the street she looks at. The whispers of the wind are like nature talking with her comforting her. She spends time outside constantly to erase the anxiety or stressful thoughts of her average day. It's a relationship that is unique to the two, and, hence, the image is powerful to imagine. Alex Peters, January 2019 |
napkin note Margaret Comerford Reminds me of elementary school when my mom would pack lunch and it’d have a note saying having a great day and love you. Pbj is actually my favorite lunch packabe sandwich, so I can see this being me. Conner Cloney, January 2019 |

i call, i stop, i listen Taron Jones I really enjoyed how in the beginning of the haiku the author seems stressed out. They have a lot on their minds but very simply it all goes away when they hear the sounds of the calming river in the background. I was always one to fall asleep to rain or listen to nature noises when studying so I understand how the author feels when they hear these calming noises. Kailey Lyons, January 2019 |

old classroom Margaret Comerford I enjoyed this kukai because of what it made me think about. I started to think about the time I went back to my old grammar school and the entire place was changed. New classroom, bathroom and a new building if you ask me. I was in shock although it looked completely different it looked better than how it did when we first started going to school there. Von Johnson, January 2019 this just speaks maturity to me. it is when you go back to where you started, and you stand there as the finished product. this was my thought when i went visit my old school and i was literally standing where i once sat and learned from. this haiku just really brings me back to that place. prom night Christian Zenon With this haiku, I saw someone who didn’t have a date or didn’t get asked out to prom. I almost went to prom by myself my JR year but a date came out the blue to rescue me from a lonely night. Von Johnson, January 2019 |
red and blue lights Kailey Lyons This makes me think of a tragedy that occured close to home, the last place you’d want it to happen. It's kind of a heart dropping moment hoping everyone is okay. I can picture a husband coming home to sirens and lights, and starting to freak out hoping his family is okay. Great imagery. Conner Cloney, January 2019 |

blazing fire Alex Collins I simply liked the joyful playfulness that this haiku spoke of. I envision a bonfire with family and friends surrounding it. You and your lover are wrapped under a blanket. I can envision the fire in front of us while the fireflies are scattering around in the distance. There are three different pictures with each line, all completing the story. We have read a lot about fireflies in the past week so I thought this was a fun edition to it. The dancing fireflies is an reoccurrence in many poems but such a fun image to think about. I love the joys that summer brings. Maggie Comerford, January 2019 |
pile Alex Collins I can relate to this kukai because I’m good for letting my clothes pile before washing them very late. Sometimes it’s hard to wash clothes when you’re very busy almost every day. So that’s what allows the clothes to pile. I also like the way this kukai is set up! Von Johnson, January 2019 |
home alone Kailey Lyons this just brings me to when a mother’s son is out and she is left home waiting. there is nothing more frightening than a mother getting a phone call in the middle of the night from an unknown number. this just makes your heart race because you dont know whats going on. one sided story Tyvon Johnson From kukai five, this is one of my favorites because it reignites with me. I recently broke up with my girlfriend and the end was result was because she was unhappy. In most relationships in this world, the reason is because girls tend to be unhappy in the long run and men don’t understand the damage they did until It’s over. Taron Jones, January 2019 |

holding each other Kailey Lyons This haiku relates to couples of all ages. It’s movie night with your loved one and one convinces the other to watch a scary movie. You are cuddled up and with every jump and scare you hold each other closer. I loved how the tighter was a lone word in the middle column. By adding the scary parts to then end it was easier for us readers to envision the movie night aspect as well. This haiku brings on a warm and lovey feeling to it. Maggie Comerford, January 2019 |
monkey bars Margaret Comerford I imagine being in elementary school again starting to notice boys but never admitting it to anyone but close friends. Parents and older kids tease about this topic a lot at this age and you cannot help but blush. I never had this experience on the playground, but it seems to be one that is portrayed many times in movies. Kailey Lyons, January 2019 |
