the c.l.a.s.s.r.o.o.m

This collection of haiku was inspired by my love for school and childhood. School should be every child’s safe haven, and that it was for me. The growth children make in school: mentally, socially, and physically, is funny, sweet, awkward…all of the above and some. School is a place for failure and success. School is where our future president attends as well as a future criminal. The memories made in school stick with us forever, whether they are good, bad, or ugly. I even return to my old teachers classrooms to help out. My experience throughout my education has shaped me into who I am today. My dream job has also remained the same, a teacher. As I go through student teaching, I am revisited by these memories frequently. In fact, a majority of my life will be spent inside a school, why wouldn't I love the place. The title of my collection, the c.l.a.s.s.r.o.o.m is simply because it is the heart of these haiku’s and every school. Every child in this country goes to school and as a future educator I am excited to love these kids as my own and create similar memories with them as I had.

          a cherry tree

i now stand
where i once sat

she raises her hand
calls me mom
strange word for her lips

nap time
snack time
i want my mom

field trip
     forged
permission slip

mother's good morning alarm
        pancake bubbles
tired eyes          excited nose

missing eye
i hold him close
               teddy

OTHER HAIKU

stepping off the field
          one last time
          embracing dad

the last bird
                migrates
        alone

out of session
a lone fish
summer school

like clockwork
he kneels with the ring
that hugged grandma’s finger

familiar emergency room
ice pack numbs
crooked nose

country road
gravel crunches
beneath my running shoes
