Colorful Sidewalks

by
Emily Mitchell

Growing up, I was always taught that haiku were composed of three lines. The first and last line were five syllables, and the second line was seven. When I entered Dr. Brooks class, I soon found out that wasn’t always the case. Over the course of these few weeks, I have learned to love and appreciate haiku much more. The following haikus are some of my favorites that I have written. Most of them include stories of my life.

colorful sidewalks
bleeding through
the rain

voices
that she cannot handle
please go away

gasping for air
the daughter cries out
please be okay

one pill every night
for the rest
of your life

the door creeks open
and I am greeted
my furry friend

the messy room
a cause and effect
of anxiety

the small paws
knead through
the dough

the lone star
illuminates the night
it's you
