Poet and Didn't Know It

When I started this class, I had no idea what I was getting into. I had never in my life written a Haiku poem. I really couldn't even tell you what a Haiku was other than I thought it had three lines. I have learned that being in a moment is what Haiku is about. I think it is harder to write a poem when given the topic rather than it just popping into your head. I’d like to think that my first tries were not too bad, and as time went by, my poems got better. This collection is here for you to decide.

northern lights
   dancing across the sky
baby wakes.

friendly conversation
food and drinks taken care of
no tip

weathered boat
lodged in sand
waiting to be launched

snow drifts
   across the road
going nowhere

she slowly approaches
   a small grave
      flowers in hand

grandma’s dishes
all unpacked
sitting atop my cabinets

lining the streets
excited children
here comes Sants Clause

their room is bare
no longer home
empty nest
