Hot Summer Days

by
Alex Blome

Before this class, I was not ever really aware of haiku. Sure, I knew what they were, but it never really dawned on me about how personal and easy they could be. Since I have been a student in this class, haiku has now been easy to spot in everything I do. Haiku are poems you can easily picture inside your head, and the greatest part is that everyone pictures every haiku differently. My haiku explain a lot about my life and the things that are around me almost every day—from being in a remodeling business, to having a hunting dog, all the way to what I do in my free time. Every single one of these thoughts really called out to me, enough to share them with you. That says a lot for I am not the kind of person to share things with a lot of people. I hope you can find the perfect picture while reading these, as I did.

measured twice
cut once
it’s still too short

old bloodhound
with the best nose
only finds scraps

hot shinny black steel
hickory smoke aroma
hours before dinner

calm summer night
watching the stars twinkle
distant coyote for company

a calm green lake
floating in the current
WAKE UP! fish on

morning coffee
family still asleep
my alone time

trails
like tiny models of rivers
Earth’s veins
