Memory Lane Haiku

by
Lauren Killian

Lately most of the time on my computer has been spent writing haiku for my Global Haiku traditions class. Before this class I never even thought about haiku or what it really was. I have grown to love haiku and explore all the different ways haiku can be created. For me, it has been easiest to write haiku on my own personal experiences or memories. Without saying the exact memory, I know the reader can feel it and possibly connect it to one of their own memories. My hope for my haiku collection is that readers are inspired to reflect and make connections to their own memories.

sweat on my brow
asphalt burning through
foursquare game continues

she brushes my hair
changes my sheets
warms my heart

milk mustaches
we laugh while
bedtimes fail

grass prickles my skin
rolling over every inch
to scratch a new itch

caramel candies
bingo
memories go

lights come on
Mom yells
what a day

snap, crackle, pop
my favorite time
in the day

wave after wave
I crash into
you
