Farm Life

the noontime sun
beating down on the small village
sparse shady spots to be found

winding dirt road
aged trees hunched over

old southern mansion
in ruins
plantation of yesteryear

sharecroppers in field
callused hands work alongside small hands

children find time to play
at day's end
laughter and giggles abound

rocking chairs on porch
hard day at and end
time for family

Bright summer day
walking in a field of wild flowers
trail crossing the creek.

Deer and her fawn at the creek
cool drink before continuing their journey.
flowers glide in the breeze.

Skipping rocks
startled fish
jumps into the air.

Butterflies darting around the trees.
following a rabbit
hopping away from me.

Picnic in the clearing
eating, relaxing, and playing
no worries.

Sun sets as the little ones tire.
riding on daddy's shoulders
back to the car.

The Work Week

hazy morning
the aroma of Kona
awakens the house

barking dog announces
paper boy's arrival

rain clouds linger
as garage door creeps open
and the old Ford pulls away

thoughts of day's meetings ahead
red light not seen

screeching tires
center scattered thoughts
back to reality

memory awakes
all of life's precious treasures.

Journey

He runs on
Clickety-clap, stop
Left with nothing

raindrops on the petal
Mother Nature cries

New life may grow
A piercing scent
Those that never bloom

a child's cry comforted
only by a mother's love

Drops fall and fall
Regrets run on and on
My shoes wear thin

realizing too late
to appreciate our love.

Ghosts

Grandfather clock
Breaks the silence
Reminder of years gone

Drips of water
Stream down the cheek

Smell the cigar
Taste the peppermint
Tea parties gone-by

Child giggles as secrets told
Imaginary friend listens

Whisps of air
Images of white
Creeks in the closet

Secrets of home
Locked into my heart.

My Grandaughter

Day with grandaughter
Youthful memories
Getting old

Front yard
Sidewalk chalk

Girlish giggles
Girlish dreams
Stay the way you are

Precious little girl
memories fresh in my mind

Someday she will grow,
And see what I see

In her little one
Mawmaw loves her forever!
little princess

Mountain Beauty

Snow capped mountains
Close to god
Place to rest

Grand tetons
A crisp spring day

Serene lake
Majestic reflections
Spirits of those long gone

Soaring eagles
Clean, crisp mountain air

The babbling of the tourists stir the air
But the beauty of nature is louder than they

A blazing red sunset
End of an amazing day
Lifelong memory

The Ballgame

Crack of the bat
Cheering crowd
Heart beats fast
Going home

Busch stadium
Hot summer day

Hot dogs, peanuts, beer
Cotton candy and soda pop
Stomach ache

Still….. the best day of summer
Caught a foul ball

Cheer for your favorites
Boo the opponents
Yell at the umpires

Exhausting day
To be a St Louis Cardinal

Magical Day

dress up clothes
giggling girls
summer vacation

young friends
carefree joy

growling stomachs
peanut butter and jelly
milk mustaches

setting sun in distant sky
chirping crickets

star filled night
full moon
distant thunder rumbles

tooth under pillow
twinkling fairies dance around

Friendship

old friendship
light fading from setting sun
heavy heart

new priorities
forgotten memories

face stained with tears
sadness fills her eyes
he tries to comfort

first frost arrives
cold, bare fields

hot chocolate simmers
snow melting on rug
snow blowers humming

empty cemetery
nothing to bury

Rengay with Family

This first Renga is with my children. It wasn't easy because I had to constantly ask those questions and get there feelings or view points. Most was funny, but was able to get from them a good sense of child like thoughts. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it with them.

Summer draws to end
Few final days
To stir the boiling pot.

Sunny the whale,
Goes under water . . .

Children jumping—
Water every where
Diving off board.

Dark skies
Time for chocolate chips

Restless children
Watch favorite movie, Larry Boy
Sitting in bean bags.

Time for bed—
Love parents and Jesus
With prayers

Green bouncy ball
Lastic band stretches
Entertains my wife.

Green leaves
Turning yellow and red

Autumn returns—
Deer graze in fields
Dust settles.

Goblins goblins every where
Candy at the door

Candle lights
Creating characters
On a harvest moon.

Snowflakes fall
Santa arrives
Bringing new year.

Bed Time

sound of a small voice
humming in the shower;
scent of soap and watermelon shampoo

drips dropping
the little big boy

exaggerated spit
of blue gel toothpaste,
some even hits the sink

one last drink,
kisses all around
he dives into bed

wide-eyed wonder
as Daddy spins a tall tale

prayers said,
lights out . . .
one last question

Precious Memories

dust particles floating
in a stream of sunlight—
she sits in the old wooden pew

shuffling of little feet
Sunday’s new black-patent shoes

the old book of songs
held in aged hands
open to her favorite hymn

melodious notes fill the air
as small voices strain—
a joyful noise

her eyes close softly
as her mind drifts back

memories of a prayer doll
she grasps her tear-soaked hanky
bells of yesterday chime

Sitting in a tree
Suns about to rise
A buck catches my eye

Fog lifting from the grass
A woodpecker is pecking

Hawk perched in a tree
Surveying its domain
Field mice scurry

children awake
sounds of storms
cry for mom

exhausted
children in the bed
out of room

neighbors knock franticly
the sky roars
a frightened family

a small child
sleep through the night
a parents love

morning approaches
early rise
makes a long day

sunny day
looking for shelter
thirsty

Freedom

wind in my face
rumble of the engine
freedom and space

warm water spray
wind in my hair

colorful sails
beautiful dreams
fill the air

warm skin
sun in my eyes Nicky

fishing with my son
reflections in the water
hot summer days

open spaces
remembering younger days

Stubborn

close summer heat
feet thump the pavement
miles down the road

black ribbon path
deafening silence

alone with my thoughts
rhythm to my pace
breathing through the heat

never ending hills
battling to the end

legs feel tired
body glistens with sweat
fluid motion

last turn to home
best time yet!

laundry hamper
full of dirty
towels and clothes

the grass grows high
chores never done

up and down
the stairs I go
it seems like all day

driving back and forth
the street never ends

endless trips
to the store
there is never enough

not enough hours
in the day

I waited to drive
I waited to gamble
now I wait to retire

growing up isn't as easy
as I thought it would be

so many taxes, bills
and other numerous
responsibilities

a sick child, I wish
I could take away the pain

Waiting to live
alone again
soon

looking down on them
I did well

At the state fair
Watching lots of people
Carrying stuffed animals
And the sound of children crying

Watching the boat races
Peering at the water
Hungry children
Eating ice cream cones
As flies gather

the smell of barbecue
families gather
at the park for a cookout

children cheering loudly
the smack of a home run

hugs, laughter and fun
countless hours
countless memories

over the years
how time passed so quickly
but, seemed to take so long

the changeless faces
of those we love so dear

never seem to lose track
of those thoughts of them
even though they are gone

day's catch

man on a mower
cutting tall grass
thoughts turn to fishing

daybreak at waters edge
headlights peer into heavens

bright sky
shows beaver hut
where fish hide

a tail slaps the water
and the cork disappears

day's catch complete
removing entrails
a man enjoys a beer

the sun sets
on fresh cut grass

Rabbit's day

Summer day
Redtail soars
rabbits hide

Lurking in the bushes
A fox looking for lunch

Noon siren
Children rush home
Mother prepares lunch

Children playing in yard
As day grows short

Sun setting
Owl hooting in woods
End of day

Under cover of darkness
Rabbits begin to feed

Standing near the water's edge
I despise
The muddy reflection

Hunger pains, inner regrets-
Where did it all go wrong

Honking in the hazy sky
I wish
To fly away

Different from them all-
I try to learn their way
The hurt inside is deep

White lilies rest
Basking in the sun

I, too, choose to rest
My reflection
Becomes clear

sun-drenched daisies
hugging in a vase
the first frost has come

death knocks at the door—
nobody's home

rain drizzles
sleet pelts
white blankets the ground

the earth is still full
life is just sleeping—
trusting in a new day

warmth envelopes the air
yellow peaks through the white

creation bursts forth
in victory

nails clicking on the hardwood floor
tail fearlessly wagging
welcome home

scary cat with watchful eye
slides across floor
perches under kitchen table

smell of blueberries
fresh baked muffins
Mom's waiting with a snack

Blueberry muffin sitting on counter
Disappeared—
No trail of crumbs

with mom's help
math lesson complete
time for catch with dad

bedtime story—
children cuddling
under their blanket

Miles and Miles

Miles of scenic highway
Fluffy white pillows
In a background of blue

Day dreaming of the
Adventures that await you

Warm sun beaming down
Hair flowing in the breeze
Freedom

No care in the world
Destination unknown

Miles and Miles traveled
Evening sets in
Stars twinkle in the night sky

You—
Have arrived !!

new neighbors gathering
The table set and overflowing
Smell of steaks a burning

Exchange of roots
The young are playing
Short night is gaining

adults are laughing
Good memories remaining

Blowing away the rain clouds
Swaying willow buds

Shadows deepen
The old man locks the gate

Midday heat is torrid
Little children loading
Cool air beckons sweating

The road is peaceful
Southwest sun is sinking

Flowing fields dot the prairie
Dry corn is peeling early
Burnt for harvest coming

A green combine waiting
The field to travel ready
Yellow ears are calling

Winter Storm

Blistering wind
On a cold winter day
Snow falls

Children play
In delight

Roads closed
Dad can't get home
Mom worries

Piping hot chocolate
White fluffy marshmallows

Dad called
he is coming home
relief

snowman stands tall
keeping us safe

Summer Fun

Hot blistering day
Out in the boat
Family fun

Picnic at the lake
On the sandy edge

Sand castles
On the beach
Crabs crawl

Picking up shells
Pink and blue

Colorful flowers
In grandma's garden
White picket fence

The sights and sounds
Of summer

Honeymoon

the long road winds into
moons over dark mountains
windshield wipers clear the view

an autumn sun unleashes
brilliant colors of aging leaves

New day at #2 meeting street
two lovers observe
widows watch

the glass of the calm bay shatters
as the dolphins jump in cadence

the trainer dangles dead fish
Shamu rises from the depths
clear day turns to downpour

draped by a single towel
two begin life as one

game day at the park
hotdogs and nachos
perfect summer afternoon

exciting pennant race
crowd going wild
child's first game

glove in my hand
excitement in the air
waiting for a homerun

fathers and sons
a special day
memories for a lifetime

Harry Carry
7th inning stretch
Take me out to the ball park

on the edge of my seat
down by one run
Cubs lose again.
