Selected Haiku by Marcia Gordon

under the same sky
your life and my life . . .
snow piles on snow

Masajo Suzuki

Masajo Suzuki is my favorite haiku author to date. I enjoy each line she writes because her haiku contain all the passion that she carried within her for so many years. The romance, loneliness, and the sacrifices were all directed toward her one true love. Clearly, this enthusiasm comes through in her haiku.

Haiku, to me, is a beautiful way to spark a memory of something an individual has experienced. I enjoy many different haiku by several authors. Alan Pizzarelli has written many of my favorites, as well as Carol Montgomery, George Swede, and Peggy Lyles. The flare and style that these writers possess has given me insight in writing my own haiku.

Thanks to my haiku instructor, Randy Brooks, at Millikin University, I have found myself writing haiku poetry. The haiku I write comes from personal experiences and relationships that I have endured in my life. The haiku in this collection are what I believe are my best work. These personal favorites allow me to reach my senses of feeling, images and to reach an actual place. I have enjoyed writing these haiku, and I hope that anyone reading them will feel the same passion that went into them.

autumn leaves
red, yellow, and orange
envelop my body

rainy evening
mother and daughter
rolling the dough

spring flowers
little hands pick
from neighbor's garden

         The Cycle of Life

thunder and lightening
whispering secrets
through an empty house

         cubbards hold plates

from a past life

hanging swing
whirls as
memories unfold

         in the attic

faded pictures

of a childhood lost

the smell of abandonment
seeps through the woodwork

         the sound of footsteps

deadbolt turns

life begins again

scattered wildflowers
her finger
encircles mine

redeye flight
the fragrant smell
of home

sitting on the rocks
brisk water
across my feet

summer moon
above the ocean
stretched out in the sand
