Pictures in My Mind

Haiku by Deb Lehman

The poems in this book are original creations in English. Each poem reflects my own life experience. A variety of subjects are covered and each has significant meaning to me
Haiku is a way to reflect how an individual perceives life, while sharing your experiences with others in their purest form. There is no wrong way to experience haiku only your way.

This is my first attempt at haiku. In this collection I will be sharing with you some of my favorite poems. What I have learned about Haiku is to write what I see and let the reader discover their own meanings and enjoy their own memories. Haiku is a great joy in my life it allows a freedom to create, that has no limit. Thank you to Dr. Brooks for sharing the treasure of Haiku with this class.

         Glimpses of Light

glare from water
the fisherman squints
to see his line

         sun peaks into the window
         baby smiles

high chair click
two teeth shine
biting spoon

         glowing mommy
         cleans a messy face

a friendly smile
startles in the mirror
the shiney braces off

         a bright new grin
         big beautiful world

                  Linda Lehman and Deb Lehman

soft kisses
his warm embrace
my alarm goes off

         late night haiku

late night homework
desklamp skims
a snickers wrapper

         diet coke can
         half full and flat

street lights
peeking thru the open blind
eyelids heavy

         the monitor
         calls my name

scribbled last lines
i click send
clock stikes midnight

         my head sinks
         into the pillow

exploring deep in the jungle
mom yells
time for bed

I like this haiku because it reminds my of my childhood. My brothers and I would play all sorts of imaginative games. We would be explorers or even super heroes. These are wonderful memories I have and it makes me a little sad to know that with all the technology today that children aren't using their imaginations for play and building these wonderful memories for themselves. I love the way this is written too because in the second line you can imagine mom playing along with the kids and she is yelling because they've encountered a tiger. Of course the third line reveals the truth. I hope you enjoy reading Deb's work as much as I have. Patti Freimuth

dad living alone
a single dove
partners for life

black board
moving lips
lost in daydream

gentle ocean waves
watching the sunset
in your eyes

warm garden dirt
bare feet
picking green beans

long grocery list
cart filled
with children

hand on my shoulder
as i toss the flower
on her grave

running hard
my heart pounding
as he crosses the finish line

paddling a canoe
as water rises
over the yard

hot dry sand
smiling eyes
offer a cool drink
