Selected Haiku

by
Diane Reasoner

My childhood was spent in a small town in north Iowa, Belmond. The middle child of seven, my father passed away when I was eleven. I later relocated to Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and finally, Decatur, Illinois.

That small town in Iowa led to some of the memories that are included within these pages. The winters were frigidly cold and always snowy. But there was enough love in our home to warm us all.

Essay on
Ed Reilly's Haiku

In Decatur, I have raised my son. Grown, with a family of his own, he continues to bring me great joy. I have also found everlasting friendships. Being surrounded by family and friends are the greatest pleasures in life. This journey in haiku I owe to them. And, to Dr. Brooks, for teaching this beautiful art to others.

snowy stillness
children play in the
warmth of mother’s love

         On Lake Calm

six white sails
reflections float
on calm water

         a light breeze
         dances across my skin

workweek
a distant memory
lazy Sunday afternoon

warm sun
begins descent
nearer the horizon

         late afternoon
         nothing but unspoken wishes

I drift away
quietly in my mind
the sunset

thump upon the roof
jingle bells

sunny summer day
with his fishing pole
daddy and me

with fireplace aglow
the world disappears
lost in each other’s kiss

sunlight through branches
frog reflects in
the stream

speaks so sweetly
he calls me Nana

new memories made in

          Nesting

Baby blue bird egg
Lies unhatched
Still and full of life

          Warmth inside the darkness
          Mom's underbelly

Dog speaks ferocious bark
Ma flys away
Egg quakes unprotected

With gift of flight
She is now a
Kamikaze pilot

          Beak strikes muzzle
          Feathers fly

Mom and babe
In the nest
Naked now
