Selected Haiku

by
Lori Baietto

Dr. Brooks’ had quite the challenge ahead of him to teach me Haiku. What I learned in his class was to read poetry, slow down and breathe. In addition, I have learned to be grateful for the simple things in life. I would have never guessed that I would have enjoyed reading poetry, but I have surprised myself in the Haiku class. Though I lack quality I my creativity, I was able to develop some sort of a collection upon Dr. Brook’s request. As I developed this collection, I realized that I centered it mainly around my family and childhood memories. Therefore, this collection revolves around particular seasons that are my favorite time year and memories of events in my life that will be forever in my heart.

colorful leaves
the smell of wood burning
and crisp cool air

sunny afternoon
floating in circles
scent of coconut

early evening
cup of coffee
home from work

no words between them
stillness in the room
peace lilies

scent of baked apples
her shared secrets

pot roast . . .
table for six
sibling chatter

. . . along the sunset
the roar of the engine
the feel of pavement
