Open & Closed Memories
Selected Haiku

by
Shawn Guise

I wrote my first haiku in 2005 in undergraduate school at Millikin University. Writing haiku for me were new and exciting. My haiku come from a variety of places and thoughts from an African American woman. I write about varies topics from what I’m watching on T.V. to my memories growing up in a catholic school.

Writing haiku for me came more natural than I thought it would because I like to think beyond the thought. I want to find out where the thought came from and where the thought is trying to go. Even though pictures can tell a thousands words, a haiku can take someone to a thousand places they ever wanted to go, and my haikus are taking new passengers. Many people believe in catchy rhyming poems, but I believe in haiku . . .

Some of my recognized work from class kukai include:

hot steamy night
curves of a beautiful woman
HIV

tired feet and secret thoughts
journey home

Actually the “tired feet” haiku was one of my first haikus, and the ‘HIV” haiku was one of my last haiku I wrote for my first haiku class. This is my very first haiku book and I hope my readers enjoy my haiku as much as I enjoyed writing them.

“How amazing Shawn, thank you for introducing me to haiku.” — Kimberly Barnett

“Shawn, your thoughts are breathtaking, especially the haiku on HIV.” —Steve Shuff

“Your haiku remind me of growing up and the world of marriage!” —Carol Dennis
