Haiku

by
Nicole Stonecipher

I have only been writing Haiku for a few short weeks, but it has caused me to become more in tune with my feelings and observations of life. Haiku is way to record a specific moment in time. It is like certain scent that can take you back to a memory that you will cherish forever. When I look back at the haiku that I have written in the past few weeks, I can remember precisely what I was doing or reflecting on during that time. Haiku can help a person to mend a broken soul or celebrate the meaning of life. I will take what I have learned from this class with me for years to come. I will also have this keepsake to remind me of not only this class, but also the struggles that I have gone thru during my time at Millikin. It will remind me that I can do anything I put my mind to, even if I am not experienced in the field.

I would like to give Dr. Brooks a special thanks for opening my eyes to something that I may have never noticed, if I had not been given the opportunity to take this class.

prairie grass
flowing like the sea
in the gentle breeze

warm hot chocolate
next to the fireplace
grandmother’s stories

warm sun
beating on my face
he hits a homerun

cold winter night
a dinner date for two
running late

tangled necklace
he patiently takes it
from her hands

Leisure

afternoon nap
in the bright summer sun
peaceful

by the pool
children splash playfully

pour another margarita
in a beautiful glass
frozen strawberries

please don’t spill it
on my new white shirt

husband kicks off his shoes
he lies next to me
on the hammock

afternoon break
worth the wait

Rengay

summer heat
beating down
on my skin

the warmth of the sand
underneath my feet

In the distance
the echo of whales
soaring thru the air

sailboats sway
from side to side

the sea stretches
for miles and miles
no land in sight

a vision of heaven and earth
intertwine
