Essay:
Monster Haiku of Ryan Mecum

Selected Haiku

by
Beckah Novak

On the next pages you will find a collection of my haiku. My approach to writing haiku is simple. It should be honest and fun. It should take you somewhere, but it won’t give everyone the same emotion. It should be personal, but not discriminating. It should appeal to a broad audience, but still maintain the dignity of the author. I’m not a great haiku writer, I’m not even a good haiku writer, poetry is not my forte. I am far too cynical and realistic. I am also too optimistic to give a good reading of my message in three short lines most of the time.

I hope that whomever reads the following poems enjoys them, and that they bring you a smile. They are not to be read seriously, they are to be read over a glass of wine. Maybe they can start a conversation with friends, because that would mean that I have succeeded in my goal as a haiku writer.

the doorframe,
broken by
his forgotten key

her giggles
and the bubbles in the air
leave me breathless

clicking keys
his desk scattered with forms
April 15th

what he doesn’t say
says everything
as I squirm in my seatbelt

black earth
the daffodils play peek-a-boo
with the sun
