Memories: Selected Haiku

by
Katrina Farris

I have been married for 11 years. We are high school sweet hearts. I have 3 children. 2 boys 11, and 6 and a daughter who is 2. The first 8 years of our marriage my husband was in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the U.S.S Carl Vinson. Due to our travels I was able to see many places, and meet many people from other countries. My family comes first in my life!

Many of my haiku come from my memories. This evolves travel, the people I met, and my husband in the service. My children also play a strong role in my haiku. I have learned the love of haiku. It comes from my heart. I now have a way to record my memories and keep them fresh in my mind. From simple moments to big events in my life now can be recorded.

saying good bye
a sea full of men
the first tear trickles down

black lace
anxiously waiting
a tugboat's horn

Ahoy!
tea and scones
her accent

The Journey

calm summer night
they whisper sweet nothings
a new love

promises made
announcement

she takes a test
positive...
Good Friday

at home
a mother rocks her child

graduation day
the youngest off to college
alone at last

a doctor's warning
the memories remain

and Katrina Farris

wild hair
and dragon breath
my child’s morning hug

a glint of sun
off the gold
grandma’s brush

our way home
as we count…
the deer
