A Day in the Sun

by
Christin Birmgingham

A day in the sun, for someone, is usually a time of being in the spotlight where something of their’s is highlighted. The sun, itself, is the ultimate means of illumination. This collection of haiku is what I chose to spotlight. There is no other rhyme or reason to why I chose to incorporate the ones I did. For this work, and this particular day in the sun, this is what should be known.

For today, anyway…

the domino
that fell too soon
still five full seconds!

at the grocery store
she puts back the dented can
damaged

when you passed out
I put out your cigarette
five years old
six
seven
eight . . .

I forgot the words
to the song I sing
when no one’s around

soup can
on the floor
my damn dog

watching me cry
old tears
she sneaks a cigarette

twenty one
on Monday
I’ve never built a snowman

x-ray takes pictures
of my broken rib
I smile for the camera
