Haiku

by
Concepcion Cruz

First of all, I was very nervous about haiku writing, I had no clue of what haiku was. The first assignment we had, I had a hard time putting my thoughts and emotions on paper. Then I remembered that haiku is very simple, there are no rules to writing haiku. I then began to relax and just write, and here is my collection of haiku. When I wrote each haiku, I was either thinking about my two-year-old son, my move from California to Illinois or my husband. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

December morning
his first cry
changed my life

sunny afternoon
chasing butterflies
run, run, run

first winter
away from home
snowflakes on my coat

a long drive
to the airport
I wipe my eyes

fire on the mountains
cars in front,
cars behind

clouds of smoke
wildfire ashes
nature knows best

hot day
skating at the beach
loving the sun

early morning
encouraging glance
time for another day

sunset on my eyes
sitting on the rock's edge
saying goodnite

highschool pride
best pajamas
at night
