65 Chevy Impala Whitney Blickensderfer I like this haiku best because it reminds me of a person appreciating the value of something. A material thing can produce so many memories and feelings. Something old, taken care of and valued makes me think of whom you were and where you wanted to go. This haiku suggests that Mom's dream car takes her back to a time in her life when she was youthful and ambitious with lots of plans for her life. I also associate an old car with a father figure. For me an old car reminds me of my Dad, he loved to go to car shows and loved washing and waxing his cars. A well taken care of car reminds me of him. Therefore, this haiku reminds me precious memories. JeTaun |

clean laundry Aaron Weldy I personally love clean clothes. There is nothing better than taking a great shower then putting on clothes straight from the dryer. That is my favorite thing about Saturdays… laundry day. I sometimes purposely wait till Saturday mornings to do laundry so that I can put them on while they are still warm. Staci |
her favorite blue jeans Beth Miller This was my favorite haiku from the matching contest this past week. My favorite part of it was the descriptive words that were used. Rather than just saying something simple such as "hug her curves", the author used "hour glass figure" to describe the curves. I think that this haiku was very clever. Amber Everyone loves their favorite pair of worn in blue jeans. This haiku explains how every girl loves their favorite blue jeans to fit. Ladies love to feel sexy. When your jeans hug your curves and show off your hour glass figure, you definitely feel sexy. I believe that men also love when ladies wear their favorite blue jeans. What straight man doesn't love to see a woman's hour glass figure? Brittany |

the chipped plate Staci Whitcomb This haiku is one of my favorites because it makes me think of my own family. We have our "treasures" which are worthless to anyone outside our family. They are just items that have been passed down from generations that are very valuable to us by shared memories. On our fireplace, we have a simple vase that belonged to my great grandma. She always had it sitting on her kitchen table with fresh flowers from grandpa. It would always be the first thing I notice when I walk into her kitchen -- the flowers always had a great fragrance and nice colors! Even though my grandma has passed away, that vase still reminds me of her and means a lot to me. Kim I picked this haiku because it reminds me of my grandmother and everything that I have that was once in her house. Anytime we would chip something she would say oh that just gives it character. I have a bowl at my house that has a chip in it, it was hers and I chipped it after she died. Initially I was upset, but then I remembered she would say it gives it character. Every time I use this bowl I think of her. I think of her most every day because her piano is in my living room and I have to walk by it every day before I leave the house for work. My house is filled with things from her house, from her piano down the refillable lotion bottle that she had at her kitchen sink with her distinct cherry almond lotion in it. It was just the 9 year anniversary of her death and even though I miss her I have no regrets when she died. She knew I loved her and I knew she loved me. Sara |

dusty Bible Tim Jankowski This is my favorite haiku from the matching contest because I picture a Bible sitting on a shelf covered with dust. It still opens to that favorite verse no matter how old it is. This may have been a Bible that was passed down from one generation to another. Tera Growing up as a child, it seemed every family members home we would visit I can always recall a Bible being on display somewhere in the home. I remember they were larger Bible's than one might use for reading or studying yet they all seemed to have tattered pages. The worn pages seemed to represent the use they had received before placed on a table for display. Some of them had collected more dust than others had and might have now been more for show than a resource for those seeking to expand their religious beliefs. A few years ago, my mother-in-law passed and she too had a large bible she kept on top of her TV. I admired the Bible several times when visiting and now have it placed in my living room for all to see. I have caught myself dusting it off occasionally, but have also gathered on the living room floor to turn through the verses to find which ones have been highlighted. Quickly a discussion as to how each one interprets the verse differently begins. After a reflection of our own interpretation, it is hard not to wonder what Nana was thinking and where she was in her life when the verses were highlighted. Even though dusty and used, the word and verses of the Bible remain the same and those favorites always have a way of re-entering our lives. Celeste |

date night Whitney Blickensderfer When I read this haiku i thought of the perfect date. I thought of two people who either have been dating for a while or a couple who has been married for a long time and are taking time out to have a date night. The night is perfect the wine is aged to perfection and the two are enjoying each others company. It is just the two of them and nobody else in the world. Shelley |

unwanted buzz Aaron Weldy This haiku really caught my attention because I believe only specific people will actually understand it. This may not be a good reason for a haiku but I really connected to it. I have been playing the guitar for at least three years now and as soon as I read it it put me in a place where this situation comes up. When guitar strings are old they will buzz. Some people may not like this sound but I one hundred percent agree that it gives attitude. I can picture my self now when I play the guitar and hear it, it motivates me more to play and keep that attitude going rather than be interrupted or disturbed and stop playing. I really liked this haiku only because it connected with me on a personal level. Tyler |
the cougher Celeste Settles Long ago, when I worked at a grocery store, I knew an old leathery woman who smoked like a freight train. She coughed all the time; a phlegmy, hacking sort of cough. When I was fortunate enough to smoke with her on breaks, she would hack and wheeze in between almost every other drag of her cigarette. It was almost as if she was conducting an orchestra within her throat. Her coughs were timed and rhythmic, just like the tune of a song. Aaron |

Old Glory Sara Reynolds I really enjoyed this haiku. I was privileged to accompany my grandfather to Washington, DC in April to visit all of the historical landmarks and memorials. This was possible through the Central Illinois Honor flight. We took 88 WWII veterans to visit the WWII memorial for the first time. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I will cherish for the rest of the life. Since that trip, I tend to be more cognizant towards recognizing veterans and the sacrifice some ultimately gave -- their lives! This haiku immediately takes me to a WWII veterans porch where he is sitting in a rocking chair waving as everyone passes by. As he stares at the flag, he remembers what it was like to be in the heart of war. You can hear the sound of the flag as it ripples through the wind. Adam |

memories Whitney Blickensderfer This was my favorite haiku from the matching contest 2. I think it was my favorite because I still have my group of friends that I talk to from my early education days. There are 8 of us in a blackberry chat group that talk to each other each and every day all day long. Reading this haiku took me to these guys and my group of friends and how close we have been for a really long time. Zach This haiku reminds me of my best girlfriend and I. We have been friends since the 4th grade. Which now makes more than 20 years. We share many memories and still laugh and talk everyday. We have had children together. Shared same birthdays and many more and everytime we talk there is a different conversation and we find there may be one we have not had before. I love to be able to say I share the friendships I have with people who have been in my life for many years and will be for many years to come. Shauna |

bed pillow Karen Logue I selected this Haiku because I have a favorite feather pillow that I have been sleeping with for atleast 11 years. This pillow fits perfectly under my stomach as I sleep and if I travel the pillow goes with me. The pillow has a special pillow cover and a case to ensure it's safety for many years of use. Beth No matter how hard the day is, or how lonely the nights have become. My bed is always welcoming. The pillow holds me, and invites me to spend the night. There is always pillow talk, and we stay close through the night. I am in love with the fact that my pillow is consistent and very faithful. Ty |

the playoffs are here Zach Keck This haiku makes me think of my son. He has always participated in sports and been a spectator too. I did insist that he hand over his clothes for washing, but there were certain articles of clothing that always had to be worn on game day otherwise you would be messing with karma. If they won a really big important game, it usually had as much to do with which pair of boxers or socks you had on as it did with how well you pitched the game. I am laughing as I write this, trust me, but when someone has these feelings, you can't convince them otherwise! Karen |

my knees are weak Beth Miller I really like this one because it reminds me of my dad. My family raced motorcycles for a few years and my dad was the inspiration behind it all. He had raced as a kid and wanted to start up again. Of course he wasn't as agile as he used to be. My dad has bad knees and a sore back but he stays very active. It just goes to show that and old dog can still do some new tricks . . . he will just be sore after. Erica |
