4 - Snow Day Kukai

Mattoon PACE Global Haiku--Kukai 4, Fall 2005

moonless night
enough light
beneath my boots

watching the snow through
steam from my coffee mug:
Peace. Warmth. Security

holiday snowman
gets fat
in the falling snow

mittens on
watching out the window
for one snowflake

snowshoes
. . . a path that leads to
the old cabin

undisturbed snow
by the side of the road
five blackbirds

we stop talking
to watch
snowflakes dance

mouth open wide
full belly
snowflakes

hands clenched
on the wheel
Texan’s first snow

late evening snow
on the drive home
the road ahead disappears

children holding hands
as they cautiously ice skate
in their tennis shoes

frozen lake
swoosh . . . swoosh
blades cut the ice

all in a pile
ready for battle
snowball fight

alone in the classroom
snow piling up
so is the homework

the sky above
drops cotton balls
one by one

each snowflake
melts as it touches the ground
New Year’s resolutions

first deep snow
two pink boots visible
from the half-dug tunnel

Sunday morning—
after clearing the snow
she puts her new boots on

wet jackets and mittens
piled on the radiator
snow day.

first fallen snow
fine and unpackable.
upset child

white ornaments
of snow
. . . hang from the pine
