Grand Finale
Selected Haiku

by
Megan Alwardt

Being new at the haiku experience has been challenging for me, yet at the same time exciting. I have learned that haiku comes easier if I can relive an experience or feeling. Having a good day or bad day also seems to change the tone of my haiku (as I’m sure will be obvious as my collection is read). I also enjoy writing about my family, especially my daughter.

I have chosen these select haiku not because I feel they are my best, but because they reveal my true feeling and who I am; a loving mother, a family-oriented person, and not perfect.

Please enjoy the following haiku and thank you for sharing this experience with me.

tiny footprints in the snow
a lop sided snowman
wears one pink glove

flowers blooming
smell the rain
tag you're it!

blankets in the grass
tightly holding daddy’s hand
grand finale

dirty tear-stained faces
an old red wagon
full of treasures

impatiently waiting by the lake
faint cologne in the air
Grandpa’s here!

shadows appear
the infamous whistle sounds
my father waits at the door

Grandma’s house
for Sunday dinner
picking queen anns lace

cardboard houses
line the streets
American dream

staring out the window
by 8:15,
all hope is lost

snow outside too cold to play
side by side
snowflakes drying on the table

warmth from the oven
shared secrets

scotch tape and ribbons everywhere
presents are wrapped
midnight

soldiers are marching
sugar plum ferries
the mouse king appears

muddy footprints on the porch
the scent of pine fills the room

angels watching from above
a child is born
Christmas is here
