Global Haiku Kukai 1—Memories

Global Haiku Tradition--Kukai 1, Summer 2004

moss covered stones
an abandoned garden
forgotten days

rolled newspapers
grass wet with dew
my summer job

snow on the glacier
now in the bottle
melted on the shelf

bun in the oven
the timer goes off
light the cigars

Laura Tucker (8)

Sunday morning
    church songs
       cardinal sings

painted canvas
    sunrise over the lake
        my face warms . . .

well-worn polished silver tray
warm buttered biscuits
a Southern woman's smile

sanded oak planking
smooth on my hand
anxious for the covering

1, 2, 3
3, 3, 6
learning to count

tent set up
fire crackling
grandpa and me

hand squeeze hard
fill up
whoop! Gas

face up
five wooden blades twirl
a sigh

Annie Clay (3)

summer of a lifetime
sand, surf, and new friendships
to be twelve again

joy of my life
responsibility beyond imagination
What did I do before?

Kathy Yarnell (5)

Quietly kneeling at the coffin
cool summer night
her last good bye

the falling leaves
his last labored breath
rest in peace

peering out the window
fresh fallen snow
angels

Jonathan Heise (5)

under the starlit night
long winding trail
streak of light

Jonathan Heise

sand on my feet
cool ocean breeze
he asks the question

crisp morning air
long walks with mom
memories forever

Stephanie Shampine (13)

the wind blows
waves roll
boats rockin

neighborhood children
stare out the window
rain stops

on a cloudy summer day
walking no more
he rolls down the sidewalk

Nila Vinson (5)

late in the evening
a jovial man
still teaching

car trunk full
empty coolers
dirty clothes
where is my vacation?

5 extra pounds
salad for lunch—
French Fries?

Kathy McDonald (3)

imagined to paper
      real sweat and tears
our first home

Rachel Costello (3)

Warmth and Comfort

Shining
               Down
                   Onto
                       Me
             The child's prayer

Rachel Costello (5)

approaching truck
the faint wail
of a saxophone solo

my two-year-old's wet kiss
a mouthful of
Pop Tart crumbs

Melanie Millikin (5)

protruding stomach and
swollen ankles
we say I do

mother's lips
silent
old rugged cross

Penny Harman (3)

the cat shutters
a male blue jay
safe outside

two lips
tulips
love in the afternoon

an afternoon swim
a mother and her son
spending time together

the waves rush in
the sun sets
they walk hand in hand

Carol Keller (6)

breath held
envelope opening
Report Card

Misty Riley (5)

velvet curtain
behind it toes and feet
tightly wrapped

walking to the bank
above me
birds playing chase

flip, flop
flip, flop
Splash!

clear stream
slick rocks
rustling leaves

crystal clear
grains between toes
ended too soon

the hurse stops
I tremble with sadness
longing for one more minute

Ciara Buzan (8)

two green hats
one from one war
one from another

Ciara Buzan (2)

foggy day
friends
sitting at the vineyards

silence
long hallway
grandpa's last breath
