Haiku Kukai 9—Barbeque

Global Haiku Tradition--Kukai 9, Spring 2003

smell of gasoline
a child's tooth—
caught in a cob

scattered lawn chairs
the dog dashes
for careless droppings

raw meat waits
no charcoal,
no lighter fluid

neighborhood barbeque
dad shows off
his new grill

smoky grill
the dog waits
for one drop of BBQ

family gathering
burgers and hot dogs
grilled just right

family BBQ
dad watches proudly
as the burgers disappear

crisp yellow sundress
smudged
by tiny fingers

she gently places
meat on the flame
sweet scent of charcoal

smoky patio
the dog laps up
a spilled beer

Bar-B-Q sauce
drips
of the faucet

family barbecue
she grimaces
at the hot-dogs with lines

hamburgers on the grill
she cringes...
at her barbecued tofu

driveway wiffle ball
neighbor's dog
sniffs at the grill

summer lunch
sweat dripping
off the juicy steak

barbeque sauce
on the baby's back
juicy ribs

CRACK ice cold beer

mesquite smoke
rises from the grill
the cook spits out a watermelon seed

between sniffs
of roasted hotdogs and mustard
relishing her sweet scent

ants steadily march
across the blanket
to the plate of BBQ

smoke rises
father stands proud
over the charcoal grill

slow buring coals
a squirt of lighter fluid
on my burger

summer evening
charcoal grill burns
requests for seconds

Family barbeque
hot dogs and baked beans
I choose a salad

in the backyard
barbeque sauce
down his shirt

warm summer afternoon
the strong smell of barbeque
from the neighbors house:(

summer night
the smell of
cookout

gas soaked charcoal
flames 10 feet high
light the roof on fire

-bar-b-q
grey charcoal
i fumble
with the grill
