TRUTH
A collection of Haiku

by

Julie Bilbrey

TRUTH is a loose-leaf haiku wordplay collection. Every haiku in this compilation gives a glimpse into the truths of my life. I chose to use a loose-leaf format to allow the collection to be viewed as a whole or as separate haiku.

My favorite haiku is titled "lunchbox love notes" and is about a tradition that my mom started. When I began kindergarten, I started finding weekly notes of love and encouragement in my lunch box. This tradition is also a reason why I chose to leave my haiku unbound. I now have my thoughts in haiku form that I can easily tuck away in a lunchbox, briefcase, or anywhere else to let someone know that I am thinking of them.

lunch box love notes
tucked neatly between fruit snacks
and a peanutbutter sandwich

staring at unopened mail
mostly bills
due yesterday

screen door open
I watch my cats
balance on the ledge

siting high in the chair
one eye open watching
my hair fall to the ground

ice cold bleachers
two tiny teammates with helmets stuck
together spinning with laughter

5 a.m. I leave my own house
I lack the energy
to thell them the party's over
