SAND IN OUR SHOES
A collection of Haiku

by

Molly Burns

My best haiku come from my own memories, both good and bad. I enjoy writing about my time in Marathon, Florida, where my aunt lives. It's a place that feels very much like home.

My haiku are all very personal, and probably mean more to me than anyone else. Writing is a very cathartic process for me, and many of these haiku also represent my way of coping with some of the more difficult times in my life.

sand in our shoes
we walk the beach
in winter coats

tide draws back
hands in the sand
hunt for hermits

August sunshine
     hiding our tears
     behind dark lenses

empty hallways
summer sunbeams
whisper secrets

after vacation
a seashell
at the bottom of my purse

at the bus stop
we clutch our coffee
as a car drives through the puddle

breezy afternoon
small hands shake Easter eggs
listening for money

moving day
the swingset
nowhere to be found

windowless cell
the lonely tutor
spins in her chair

lunar eclipse        toes in the ocean

home from the funeral
the living room
a flower garden

palm fronds rustle
in the tropical breeze
home

ocean calm
kayaking
with the manatee
