Brittney Gillespie (9)

Ah, the draft. Where government force people (in this case men) into slavery, making them complete some of the most dangerous and vicious tasks in the world. Since 2002 I had been unbelievably paranoid of such a thing, only to learn in 2006 that Asperger's Syndrome is keeping me off the battlefield. Of course, I still intend to move to Canada after college, anyway. I suppose I should visit a few times, first. Rider

Neil Armstrong
one small step . . .

Cindie Zelhart (6)

This haiku reminds me of the creativity that competition makes in people. Creativity has let humans make their lives easier and has solved many of the issues that our ancestors believed in. This was clearly shown when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and through that you saw that human curiosity about nature has let humans use it for our own advantage. The haiku above shows the determination that many show to achieve their dream or play with nature. Alya

This haiku struck me as odd and intriguing, especially knowing that John Lennon made that stupid comment that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus. I am wondering if the author is relating listening the beatles to a spiritual experience? Philip D

This haiku was written fantastically. I can feel the anticipation. I know it is talking about when man first walked on the moon. I can only imagine how the world felt in front of their TVs when it first happened! I loved this haiku! Lorin

Lizabeth Hare (9)

I always thought it was so horrible that they would hide the girls who became pregnant from the rest of society. It was such a taboo that the families didn't want disgrace brought into or gossip started about their household. At least society has progressed to more acceptance today. Brittney

This cracks me up, because even though I am a girl I would totally know all the dance moves to everyone in Grease. It was the hit movie and everyone loved it. I remember being the pink ladies for Halloween. The movie was what everyone seemed to enjoy. I still do it to this day. It’s a hit that will never end. The funny thing is, my mother remembers doing the same thing growing up. She says she absolutely loved that movie. Sarah

I really enjoy this Haiku. Each generation has a gap with the generations before it. The older generations judge the younger generations. Whether it be Rock n Roll, Rap, or whatever, there is always the "noise" that the older generation hates. I think there will forever be generational gaps and eventually we will be the ones not liking the "noise" our children listen too, its inevitable. Lizabeth

This one I find a bit amusing, possibly how it was said, because I'm not sure what to say about it. I can't help but think that if I actually wrote any of these, at least half of them would take place in 2010 or later. Rider

Lizabeth Hare

This reminds me of the scene in Carrie, where all the boys are trying on different tuxedos for the prom. The best ones that make them look the most dashing are the powder blue one with ruffles, and the black suit with lapels so wide that the only person who looks suitable in such a thing now have a few girls working the corner. I mean, everyone can look back and say, oh god, what were we thinking? But honestly, couldn’t anyone see that pastels and ruffles wasn’t the GQ look? Deirdre

Keith Chandler (8)

This haiku is so true. Parents always think that their children have horrible taste and don’t know how to dress themselves appropriately. However, I’m sure that if we pull out the photo albums they have nothing to talk about. Even people that are now lawyers and doctors at some point dressed horribly, horribly wrong. Rachel

Brittney Gillespie (8)

Although I was only in elementary school when this whole fad was in, I really attempted to do my hair like this. I had older cousins that used to babysit me and they totally rocked out big permed hair and curled bangs. I wanted to be them, along with Kelly Kapowski and the girls from 90210. I would sit on our bathroom counter and attempt to curl my hair and make my hair big-unfortunately I ended up with a couple of curling iron burns on my forehead. Jenna

I remember all the times I tried to look like my big sister. She would be in the bathroom for hours to get her hair just right. I would be in there right after her doing the same thing. So glad I grew out of that. Lindsey

My mom used to love to dress me up. She always put my hair in sponge-rollers at night and would make my hair like Shirley Temple. I had super skinny, straight hair so it took a lot of hairspray to get the curls to stay. I always wanted curly hair so I looked forward to having my hair done. I was always a little brat when it came to talking and even when I was four, I would say valley-girl like things. I always had this attitude and was very stubborn as well. Shannon

The haiku above gives an image of an 80’s girl with sneakers and huge hair. Now that we look back we are horrified that they did this in the 1980’s but it was a fashion that had a dare to it and was bold and that is what I think about the 1980’s decade. Also, the big hair give you the ability to be noticed and be cool which is what many concepts that are seen in the high school clicks come from. The haiku just makes you feel like you were there and that you had the big hair and was waving it around to rock music. Alya

So many good movies came out of the 80's and every time I watch them I am reminded of the hilarious hair do's and outfits they thought were high fashion. When I read this, I was cracking up because all my aunt's and my mom fell victiim to the 80's poof and my mother still thinks her hair looked great. Lizabeth

Brittney Gillespie

Being a product of the late '80s, early '90s, I was too young to remember or truly experience the wonder that was Poison. Looking back, however, I'm still confused as to how they, along with other incessantly depressing and embarrassing bands like Whitesnake, became as popular and well-known as they remain to this day. Apparently, in the '80s, women had no taste, and loved men in lycra, tight leather, and white jeans. 10,000 of them, according to this haiku...

Shannon Hackl (5)

The 80's workout tapes and shows were so hularious. Seriously, who could work out in a thong, let alone having it as a leotard with leggings underneath it? Not to mention the horrible music in the background... Brittney

I can identify with this because my mother actually used to teach aerobics. When I was little she would take me with her to work and I thought she was so amazing. Now I look back and wonder if the leg warmers, thong onzies, and wrist sweatbands were actually necessary. How much does one’s wrist actually sweat? Rachel

Pac Man

Rachel Morrison (8)

I can see a boy spending hours and hours playing on a pac man machine and almost all of his allowance, just to get the high score and put in his three initials. I used to do the same thing in Pizza Hut lobbies, simply because by the time I came around arcades were on the downfall, because of the rise of personal gaming systems. Whenever I won, I put ASS as my initials. My mother would always yell at me. Deirdre

Keith Chandler

I was born in 1985! Alot of the music made suring my life has not be so good. I listen to mostly music that was made a long time ago. I can tell the author feels maybe a little bit the same way as I do. Also, this haiku is a little sarcasdtic and the author does a good job of making that clear, through the context. Philip D

Mom babysits
all 3 tamagotchi pets
while we’re at school

Chonita Ziegler (15)

This haiku is so true. They were banned at my school. I did not want it to die though and you could not pause it. This game taught me responsibility though. I no the seasonal element is during the school year. And since I know what these pets are I know what it felt like to use and play with them. Lorin

This haiku literally made me laugh out loud because this was my mom back in the 90’s. When tamagotchi pets came out my mom thought they were ridiculous and she swore that if we got them she would have no part in taking care of them. Of course, when Christmas break came time to end and we needed to go back to school, my mom gave in and took them along to work with her. She would feed them, change them, play with them-basically provided all the care a mother would to any of her children, except in this case the children were digital pets. Jenna

This entry brings me to the memory of the craze of tamogothchi pets. I imagine kids at school calling their mom at lunch asking if Jem, Bubbles and Mandy Poo Poo Face had eaten, being played with a bathe. Mom forgot to Feed bubbles, Bubbles protested all day while mom was attending to Mandy Poo Poo face and Jem and bubbles dies. Jay

mrs. zach morris

Brittney Gillespie (13)

I was absolutely obsessed with Saved By The Bell. I loved Zach and would come home everyday and sit literally 6 inches from the t.v. and I usually told my mom I was going to go into the t.v. and kill Kelly to be Zach’s girlfriend. Needless to say I was a little weird! This was one of my favorite shows ever and I just remember watching this show every day. Shannon

I remember this like it was yesterday. Me and my friends would all switch who was Mrs. Zach Morris that day. It was fun. Andi

I absolutely love this haiku because I, like all other girls in the 90’s was IN LOVE with Zach Morris. I actually wanted to be Kelly Kapowski since I knew how much Zach Morris loved her. I think this is the perfect haiku for our generation because we can all relate to the show Saved By the Bell. I know that everyone of my friends and I watched this show daily, and I won’t lie, I still watch it when I see its on TV. Whitney

Cheesy, yes I know. But Saved By The Bell was the best show ever. I was hooked to it. And of course I had a crush on Zack Morris. Some girls liked Slader, but I always imagined me as Kelly. Once again it is sad but true, and all the girls liked it the same. The greatest thing about it was that the dress totally describes what we wore in the 80’s and 90’s. Sarah

I want to be
Kelly Kapowski

Shannon Hackl

I'm not sure if this was a common dream of women my age, presumably to be with the awesomeness that was Zach Morris, but to this day, I still have the biggest crush on Kelly. I laughed when she'd prank Zach with Slater, I cried when she was died red right before Homecoming, and I fantasized when she cheered in her little outfit. I love you Kelly Kapowski...always and forever.

I chose this as one of my favorites because I wanted to be Kelly Kapowski!! What young girl didn’t? She was the popular, smart, cheerleader who had the hot boyfriend. Every girls dream… And besides, Saved By the Bell was awesome! Chonita

Dr. Martens

To mainstream

Shannon Hackl

I also really like this haiku, because I am pretty sure I owned 12 pairs or more Dr. Martens. I thought they were the coolest shoes ever and I was always sure to have the latest pair. I look back at them now and think: “what was I thinking?” I think that is one that that is funny about the decades that is humorous to me, all fashions change and when we look back on it we are always “wow, now that was hideous.” Whitney

I picked this haiku because I remember it like it was yesterday, but in reality it was quite some time ago. Even today, it is still a big joke. Did OJ kill his wife? Still no one knows… Chonita
