herhandsshakeassheopensthebox Alyssa Owens (10) I usually don’t like the ones that are all squashed together, but I love this one. I like how it adds to the nervousness the woman feels. It is one of those moments that you can’t believe is happening. You’ve been waiting for it and expect it to be perfect. When it finally happens, you're scared that it's not real or too good to be true, because it is better than you imagined it could be. Rachel This haiku is amazing. It captures the nervousness and excitement of the woman. Her heart beats about the same speed as one would read this haiku. The haiku is straight and to the point while including the needed descriptions. Brittney I thought this was a great haiku. The way it is put together is very clever. All the letter “s”s gives the feeling of someone kind of stuttering like they were nervous, which I’m sure this woman was when she opened the box. If she wasn’t expecting a ring, she would probably have been more nervous. You have to read it a couple of times to get the complete feeling, but I thought this was a really good haiku. Cindie I love this. Reading this all smushed together you feel the nervousness and excitement. Its cute how excited this girl is. I see this as the first time that she has really been treated well by a guy. That is why she is so excited. She is happy that this guy really respects him. Its cute and playful. When someone gets excited they talk really fast and act really jittery. Its really fun and playful, I sense the excitement of the Valentine’s Day fun. Sarah The girl knows what is coming and is anticipating what is going to happen. She knows what is happening or going to happen and is so nervous since she has wanted this for a long time. She is waiting and anticipating that he is going to give her the ring of her dreams. Shannon When i think of this i get the picture of this guy who has gotten down on one knee and proposed to his girl and she cant even get the box open because her hands are shaking so bad she is about to have a nervous breakdown. home made Valentine Amy Hofstetter (8) In elementary school, I was told to make my own valentine’s to the kids in class. The funny thing about this is that I hated it because I had no artistic experience at all, and I did not like to draw or make anything altogether. I remember how my mother had to help me make the cards, and how I would spill the glue on the table and the glitter for the girl cards on the carpet. It was a time that made me to start hating the day and yet remember the friends that I had left behind. Alya |
laying in bed Whitney Minor I see myself and others lying in bed to spend the hallmark holiday dwelling. It just reminds people of loneliness I ask this question ever year. I ended up being single on this day no matter what. I try to continue the relationships but they just don’t work up till v-day so I wonder when will it be my last day to be lonely. Lorin I just get this feeling of this person who has had a rough time with relationships and is down and out on her luck and that she is ready to love again she really wants someone to lay next to her and feel that void that she has in her heart Grandville |
a diamond ring Brittney Gillespie (6) I like this one because I get an image of a couple that has just recently got in a fight and the girl gets mad and throws her engagement ring at him and it hits him in the head. Andi This reminds me off the time my EX-BOYFRIEND broke up with me the day before Valentines day. He said he didn’t want to put it off for another day. So I threw the promise ring he gave me at him. It didn’t hit him in the face, I wish it would’ve. Lindsey This haiku really made me laugh. I see this newly engaged couple. One day they get into a really bad fight over something really stupid and she takes off the ring he gave her and throws it at his head. At the end of the night they get over it and make up and they realize how stupid they were. They also realize that that’s why they love each other and are going to spend the rest of their lives together. Joan |
snow day Deirdre Fields (7) I really like this haiku because I can picture the cranky old lady who sees a younger person shoveling the driveway next door. Maybe the old woman doesn’t have much contact with people and meaning well she goes out to tell this younger person an easier way to shovel, but because she doesn’t get to talk to many people and so when she starts to give advice she sounds cantankerous. Alyssa I love how this haiku shows how old people are really set in their ways to the tee, even when it comes to shoveling snow. I get the image of this kid, not so much out of the kindness of his heart but his parents volunteered him, shoveling this old woman’s driveway and she’s yelling at him that he’s doing it wrong. It’s ridiculous because the boy thinks if it’s done and clear, it’s fine. He is just infuriated with the fact that he’s there doing this work against his will for this old hag who doesn’t even appreciate it. Keith This entry hits home..slams the nail on the head repetitiously. I’ve been either a. shoveling elderly individuals residences pro-bono or for monetary compensation or b. shoveling for my grandmother and either way their going to make an attempt to tell you the proper technique for snow removal. In the back of your head always floats “If your so proficient in snow removal why the hell is the shovel in my hands? Jay |
could they tell Jenna Pelej This is true for everyone. There is point when we all lose our innocence. Whether this is implying it or not, I picture a girl losing her virginity. She is no longer daddy's little girl. She is a woman, independent, and living her own life. Yet, at the same time, she still wants other’s approval. Rachel This one is so nicely written that you can actually see a teenage girl laying in bed wondering what she had done. She has sinned and did not want to. It is a scene everyone has thought of. This could be seen in a movie in the typical middle-class suburban girl. Shannon The is an interesting situation perhaps this haiku is about facing your parents after loosing your virginity. That seems like what this is about. Especially since the author of this haiku believes that whoever is seeing the girls ‘sinner eyes’ is likely to conclude that she is no longer a little girl. two young boys whisper Brittney Gillespie (8) I really like this haiku because it gives a voice to the two boys. I also like it because it shows an innocent, sweet moment in the midst of something that is supposed to be sad. Ayssa I think this haiku depicts the naivety of children. When someone dies, children don’t always realize the gravity of the situation and not realize that it is a time to turn off the curiosity of imagination. Honestly, it just seems like something I would have done when I was little. Keith |
overplayed guy problems Brittney Gillespie I really liked this haiku because it shows the irony of boy problems. Some girls complain for days about a stupid thing their boyfriend forgot to do or something he said. To them, not returning a phone call is the end of the world. These boy problems are never talked about once, they must be brought up over and over again, until the girl has received feedback from all of her friends, stating that yes, she is right, and yes, her boyfriend is a jerk. They are so busy complaining that sometimes they forget to ask about other people, as in this haiku. The author of this haiku had something to be upset about, they just had to mourn the loss of someone they cared for. Unfortunately, those around him/her are too busy discussing their own problems to care. Jenna |

sigh… Rachel Morrison (5) The haiku above describes the feeling I had as I was walking toward class last Tuesday morning. The weather was cold and the snow was up to my knees. Of course I just ignored the snow and I made my way to the school to find out that the school has shut down. The amusing thing about this is that I was about to cry as I stared at the 2 feet snow I had to battle again to make it back to the dorm. After the reaching my goal I cursed and sighed on how horrible the day has gone. Alya This is how I felt the day we all had to come back to school. I live off campus, and none of the sidewalks where clear. I was so angry! I had to bring extra shoes, my jeans would be wet. It was just a pain! Philip K

listed in a relationship Jenna Pelej Oh facebook! It seems like college kids lives are now consumed with facebook. We look to it as our source for what is going on in our social circles. I’ve seen this all too many times. Many times when people are starting a new relationship the girl is quick to declare it on facebook way before the guy is ready. Philip K |

pink plastic sleds Jenna Pelej I picked this as one of my favorites because on that first snow day, some of the softball team and I went and played football in that blizzard. It was just like I was a kid again. As a kid playing in the snow; it seemed like you never got cold. You could play out there for hours. So that day I was a kid all over again. Chonita I really like this haiku. It reminds me of when I was in high school and my friends and I would go sledding late at night or on a snow day. A lot of other people made fun of us and said we were too old to do that sort of stuff anymore but those days sledding and acting like a little kid are some of my favorite memories. Lizabeth |

flowers candy Jay Johnson I feel so sad for this boy… if it wasn’t so hilarious. I have ice-water running through my veins. You know, it seems to me that the more you try to tell someone that you just don’t really like them that much, the more they re-double their efforts to prove to you that they are worth liking. It’s a vicious cycle. I can only imagine the frustration the rejected Valentine feels, but perhaps he could do something petty, like throwing out one of her socks so she can never have a matched pair again. Deirdre |
out to dinner Joan Tirado This haiku is really easy for me to relate to. I really like this because I feel as though this is about two friends that are going out and mourning not being able to celebrate Valentines Day with true love. Instead they share it with the next closest thing, their best friends. They go out to dinner and talk about how they will never find men and everyone else ever has. They talk about when it will be there turn, and there must be some really great guy out there somewhere. My friends and I often do this, especially when everyone else seems to be so happy together around us. Whitney |

roads covered in snow Jenna Pelej I can totally relate to this haiku because that’s how I’ve felt every morning for the last week when I turn off my car in the Millikin parking lot. I see this person arriving at their destination and giving a huge sigh of relief that they make it, safe and sound. Little cars are so much harder to drive in the snow, so it’s that much more of a relief to get where you are going. Cindie This happened to me just the other day on my way to class. The roads were terrible, snow drifts four feet high, I still pushed forward in my red Saturn ion. Only to find out class was cancelled. Lindsey |

sand between your toes Andi McCoy I always imagined my perfect first date as being on the beach. We would just walk and hold hands until the sun came up. One of those perfect nights that can never be duplicated. Perhaps one day my perfect imagined first date will become a reality. I dont know what it is about the beach but there is something very passionate about it. Lizabeth |
eyes closed… Keith Chandler (8) This would be one of the worst feelings in the world to experience. To have someone laying next to me or involved in some physical manner but they are thinking about someone else would piss me off and make me feel insignificant. Yet this happens in some relationships when the man or woman just is enamored by someone else. It's rough and horrible, unless they bail out of the relationship to not make the other or themselves feel trapped or insignificant. Brittney This haiku is so romantic in a really sad way. I see this guy who is with this girl and they go out and celebrate Valentine’s Day. He secretly really likes someone else but is really scared of hurting his girlfriend because she is so sweet. At the end of the night when they kiss all he can think about is this other girl and his current girlfriend can feel that there is something wrong. Joan |

paper cut Lizabeth Hare I really like this haiku because it is such a bittersweet feeling. It is almost exciting, the thought of having a valentine and getting a valentine card. Then something happens and things go bad, and that same person that you were so excited about, makes you upset. To end it all, when you are reminiscing about how things used to be and looking at the valentine he gave you, you have a paper cut to remind you of how things went bad. Whitney This is very ironic. I like that the paper cut was from the Valentine. This is so contradictory that it stands out and makes a statement. A paper cut hurts so much even though its so small. Its amazing how something so small can hurt so much. Its something like receiving a card from someone who left you. You can simply throw the card away and ignore it, but it hurts, and because of that it brings back memories. I see the Valentine as the paper cut in this woman’s life. That is what is so strong to me about this haiku. Sarah I think that this haiku is a great example of the empty feeling that you get when someone you have feelings for reveals that they don’t feel the same way. It comes sharp and quick at first, like a cut, and leaves you an empty husk. Even though you’ll get over it, the wound will always be there, and you will have changed slightly, forever. John |
I stab you Lizabeth Hare (4) |
I look in the mirror Joan Tirado (11) This haiku also reminds me of me. I do look in the mirror. When I look I feel as if I am a fairly attractive girl. I think I am pretty. But then I don’t understand how I could be lonely then. Why do the less attractive seem to not be lonely? I question this while staring in the mirror. This haiku also brings up a point just because you're beautiful does not mean instant un-loneliness but what I don’t get is, that I have depth more the just physical. Lorin |

a dozen roses Jay Johnson I feel that this haiku is a very good description of what a perfect romantic evening is like, as sappy as that is to admit. Every gift and every sentiment of love is, in the end, immortalized in a metaphorical snapshot. It’s a great, yet fleeting, feeling. John |
heart racing Rachel Morrison I like this one because I have had this moment before. You are standing next to the guy that you like and just keep wondering if he is going to kiss you or not. Andi |
thump— Rachel Morrison (9) This entry makes me envision a sister and older brother enjoying their favorite winter pastime of sledding. The satire in this entry is evident by the fact that the younger sister is hard-headed. Older brother informed her prior to her descent downhill to travel feet first. For being insubordinate she is rewarded with a medium sized red knot on her head resulting from the union of her cranium and the pine tree trunk. Jay |

tears of joy Whitney Minor I chose this haiku because I always think about the next time I’ll get to see my first love. He’s now in the Army based in Texas and has a wife, but he will always be my first love. He is someone that has affected my life in many ways. So it makes me extremely happy just thinking about the next time I get to see him. Chonita |
sneak Brittney Gillespie The stock room is like the magical fantasy land for waiters and waitresses. In the stock room you can smoke, you can bitch about your boss, you can eat the food you aren’t supposed to be eating. Unfortunately, I’ve been a server longer than I’ve wanted to, and had it not been for the stock room and all the relief it gave me, I probably wouldn’t have made it through. Also, it seems that every bit of restaurant gossip revolves around the stock room, although when I worked at the country club it was always the ballroom… Deirdre |

shaken woman Brittney Gillespie (3) This haiku reminds me of my first accident. I don’t know if I really like this haiku because it brings be back to a really traumatic time, but I think it is a good haiku. The word shaken in the first line definitely explains the feeling someone has after an accident. I remember crying so hard because I had just turned 16 two months prior to my accident and I thought my parents were going to be so mad at me. The police officer almost didn’t let me drive home because I was crying so much. I remember standing outside my car looking at the damage, wondering how I was going to explain this one to my parents. Jenna I like this haiku because I recently had a similar situation. I was driving north on I-57 just north of Rantoul. When as I attempted to pass a snow plow that was making a lot of snow ‘fly up,’ I lost control of the vehicle. I attempted several times to straighten the vehicle, turning away from the direction the back of the car was fishtailing toward. But is was no use, I ended up just five feet off of the road but stuck in the snow. $100 later a wench truck pulled me out. I turned around and never got to make it home to see my family. Philip D |
