sizzling on the stove Andi McCoy I really like this haiku because it reminds me when Justin made dinner for me. I was on vacation in Florida and we had been dating for about 6 months. He had never made a dinner from scratch before. He made chicken parmesan with a cobbler dessert. He did a really good job. It was so sweet since he had never made anything like that. He even pounded the chicken with bread crumbs that he made from scratch as well. I was very impressed and it also created some butterflies between us with the anticipation of seeing each other and of eating it. Shannon |
slaving over the stove Brittney Gillespie I usually cook for my little brothers when my mother works but the horrible thing is that I try to give them a decent meal that they never appreciate. They are either too picky about it or just eat all of it without saying thank you. I mean when someone puts their presence near a hot stove for hours, appreciation is not always forthcoming from those that eat the meal. Maybe people who eat the food should cook for themselves to see start to appreciate those that do it for them. Alya It must be a frustrating feeling to work very hard to make a good homemade meal and, have it scarfed by kids. The meal that so much care was put into is devoured like the carcass of a pack of wolves recent kill. Philip D |
he stays the night Chonita Ziegler (3) This haiku makes me laugh. It isn't even his place to ask for breakfast if he stayed over. If she had offered it, that would be one thing, but it says he asked. Tell him to get his own food. Brittney |
a little of this Lindsey Jones (10) This is one of my favorites because it reminds me of me! I can’t cook, so now that I live on my own it really hard to find something to eat. I will throw things together that shouldn’t even be eaten together. Chonita I thought this was cute. I actually do this on a regular basis and never really cook anything organized. It is always a bunch of snacks throughout the day mixed with my own concoction. If I'm missing something from a recipe, I tend to improvise and make up a new one. Rachel |
flour on my cheeks |
double cheeseburger Randy Brooks As bad as it may sound, I've thought this same thought before. McDonald's tends to be one of my comfort foods and the dollar menu has saved me from rough nights. Comfort food will be my demise. Brittney |
he touches her shoulder… Shannon Hackl (10) I really like this haiku because it is not only lovely in its context, but it is also symbolic. Here is this image of a man touching a woman’s shoulder just as the water starts to boil, a simple image against a simple image. The metaphor is the boiling passion between the two people. It could be anger, love, or sexual frustration. Either way, something is boiling. Keith I really like this because I think it can be added to our “spicy haiku.” I think that it shows the intimacy between this couple like they can't keep their hands off of each other. I think this is something every couple longs for in a relationship. I think everyone can also relate to the boiling water and how hot it is with the feeling of how hot a relationship can sometimes be. Whitney |

crying into my John Wright (8) I think of this and I am reminded of all of the times I have been hurt by men and how we women usually try and forget about this problem: food. We all find that comfort food and say the same things over and over again: “I don’t even care anymore, screw men, I’m never dating again.” I think all women can relate to this feeling, and I’m sure all men at some point too. Whitney |
she orders John Wright (6) Not only is there the immediate phallic symbolism here, but the idea that a girl might possibly be eating more than a boy. I like this girl, she isn’t afraid to get what she wants to get, and that too might make him feel inadequate. Deirdre |

Grandville Shannon (10) I like this haiku because of how it is formatted. I think of Thanksgiving when I read it, and how you just pile everything on your plate and you don’t care about mixing it all together. You are just so excited about finally eating that you eat it all so fast; just like this haiku is read. Chonita |
the cake tastes… Keith Chandler I absolutely love my grandma, but sometimes her food is not the best. She is a diabetic and her food is not always that fresh. She will use food that is older, by a few years. She always likes her sweets and is always trying to make them better. Shannon |
just woke up Lindsey Jones (8) The haiku describes me on the weekends when I just want to sleep in and not make the effort to feed myself good food. I can just imagine going to the restaurant with some friends the day before and taking some of the leftover back home. The funny thing is that my kitchen is always filled with food but lacked in the instant food kind that I can pop in the microwave. This is the worst nightmare for my parents to see when they walk into the kitchen and watch me eat last night’s pizza. Alya It’s delicious, that’s all I have to say. Other than I wish this haiku had a little more to consider than just the image of the cold pizza. Deirdre |

intense hours of food network Lorin Glazer I can recall all the time I have watched Emeril Live to get recipies. My husband loves italian food and Emeril knows it all. When we first got married I would burn alot of our food. He would eat it anyway because he loves me so much. I am so lucky. Lindsey |
steaming with butter side |
corn bread Philip Jones My grandmother makes the best cornbread int he world. She always ads her secret ingredient (sugar) to the mix. When I was a little girl my friends would always want to go to my grandmother's for her famous corn bread. Lindsey |
grill lines intact Jay Johnson (3) I think I am just really hungry for steak because this haiku makes me extremely happy. For someone who is not a vegetarian, steak is like the perfect meal and one that is cooked perfectly is like art in the form of food. And what else are cows good for, honestly? I prefer them in steak form than living. Keith |
sweet chocolate Sarah VanderZee This reminds me off how every parents always comforts their kid with food. When they are sick or they get hurt, we give them a piece of candy "to make it better" I like the word melt in this haiku, and slowly. I also like how they specified that I was sweet chocolate instead of semi sweet, or dark ect. Lorin |

it’s spring Cindie Zelhart I really like this one because I love spring and I love to cook outside on the grill. It’s fun to have family over when you cook on the grill and then sit by the campfire when it gets cold at night and roast marshmallows. Andi I feel like when spring starts it is always surrounded by food. Grill of course. I smell the barbeque in the air during spring. Everyone is so excited to be able to cook outside after a long winter. The seasonal element is very appropriate in this haiku. The initial fire of the grill means it is starting of spring... This haiku make me happy... Lastly this haiku reminds me of family or friend get togethers. Lorin |
warm and soft with Rachel Morrison (8) I thought this was the perfect description of cookies right out of the oven. I think that’s when they’re best. I can just imagine someone smelling the cookies and having to go get one while they’re still warm. Cindie |
words from last night Keith Chandler I can imagine a couple, newly married, sitting at the dinner table. The feeling of akwardness and anger lingers in the air. Both people have no desire to say a word to one another. But because his new brides food is blan, he asks her to pass the salt. This just adds insult to injury. He then sleeps on the couch for the second night. Lizabeth I thought this one really puts you in the moment. It seems like there a fight the night before and they are in the awkward silence stage. It's the point where you don't have anything left to say, but aren't ready to apologize either. The only words that actually come out are shallow chit chat or bitter requests like asking for the salt. Rachel |

Mom's snicker doodles Randy Brooks I can imagine a mom and her young daughter baking Christmas cookies together. The little girl has been patiently waiting all day long for a taste of just one. She has been sneaking batter but her mom knows it. She is excited when her mom finally tells her she can have one cookie when they have cooled. Nothing tastes better than something her and her mom have made together. Lizabeth |

exam day Alya Saqer Isn’t it the truth, big exam that you may or may not have study enough for, and all you can think about is a blueberry muffin. Also, a blue berry muffin would be a most appropriate breakfast to ensure that the test taker has had at least something to eat. This can increase the dynamic activity of the brain and thus increase test scores. Also, coffee and smoking cigarettes has been found to increase test scores because they change the brain’s state. the recipe Philip Jones I read this haiku two ways. First, this haiku makes me think of the times when I’m cooking something and I’m half way through fixing it before I realize that it calls for something I don’t have in the house. I live out in the country so I can’t just jump in the car and get something really quick. The other way I read it was that out of all the ingredients in the recipe, the almonds are the things I am really craving. Cindie |
ice cream in Rachel Morrison (5) I like this on because I love ice cream especially during the winter. I like the sensation of being cold and then sitting in your car and getting hot from the heater and then eating Krekles lemon ice cream. Fantastic! Andi |
