Snapshots

by
Alyssa Owens

I have titled my haiku collection “Snapshots” because I believe that a good haiku is like a picture. A good picture can say a thousand words, and a good haiku can capture emotions in just three small lines. While writing haiku, I strive to create a moment and a feeling that not only is personal to me, but has the potential to be personal to someone else. So, I hope that you can glean some meaning for yourself from my haiku.

winter night
we cuddle under the quilt
as mom sings us to sleep

steaming hot cocoa
kids swarm the kitchen
leaving snow trails

icy wind
calms
her flushed cheeks

rain patters on pavement
old stories bring laughter
to the mourning

funeral procession
thousands of state cops
honor one man’s son

heat of summer
small feet on a trampoline
crack the egg

splashing streams
dad baits his son’s
fishing hook

a pint of moose tracks
and a DVD
better than any stupid boy
