Destiny

wilted purple violets
proudly arranged
in a crystal vase

the small child’s gift
for Mother’s Day

rain falls
into the concrete earth
dog barking

a stone angel perched
distant gaze

white outline of the moon
outshone
by the sun

a new presence
peeking through

light of dawn
a student’s memory
of an old path

breakfast
uneaten on the table

cars pass by
to signal
a hurried rush

daylight in his old eyes
a worn race

worry lines
crease his face
as he stares at the clock

feelings of anticipation
as his heart begins to thump

new moon
no hope found
at the clinic

a woman’s shadow
on white walls

no longer hiding
her stomach
begins to show

new life begins to grow
fresh as the new day

outside the window
a single tree
begins to blossom

encircling limbs
the wake of disaster

the rumble
of distant thunder
promises rain

silence
the smell of ozone

wasting away
she closes
cloudy eyes

a ray of hope
circle of friends

on the porch swing
two glasses of tea
comforting words

the alley cat
digs in the trash

searching for contentment
or a place
to belong

memories of the past
are strewn throughout

an old photo album
lies open on
the floor

sinking into dreams
whispering melody

a crystal ball
woman’s gaze
full moon

superstitions of the night
the howling fades

long walk home
they sneak away
off the beaten path

into the shadows
stars sparkling above

on the trampoline
they reminisce
late night secrets

an old man’s anguish
distant laughter

dangling from
the rearview mirror
cherry blossom scent

deep in the pool
smooth stones
