Summer Love

by
Amanda Lee

At the start of haiku class, I had no idea what I was doing. I always thought that haiku was supposed to be in the 5-7-5 pattern. I learned from this class that I was very wrong. Haiku class has taught me a lot about haiku and I feel as if I have become better a better writer because of it. I like to write my haiku based of off events I have experienced and things I have seen. Most of my haiku is very personal. I like to write mostly about summer and love, and that is why I chose to name my collection “Summer Love.” The haiku in this collection mean a lot to me, and I hope they mean something to you as well.

his deep breaths
move my body
up and down

in the practice room
she hits a note
flawless

3 weeks late
her life
or theirs

country evening
edge of the pier
his bobber stays still

rooftop talk
we laugh and ponder
the future

tailgate kiss
hint of bud light
on his breath

sand between my toes
the smell
of bonfire

First Kiss

evening moon
reflecting on
the rippling water

two lovers meet
on the edge of the pier

feet dip in the water
cool breeze
he offers his jacket

he stretches his arm
and pulls her close
goose bumps

shooting star across the sky
both wishing for a first kiss

they turn
desire in their eyes
perfect bliss
