Seasons of the Heart scattered leaves Ellen the window's jammed Cheri autumn chill Sarah Grandma always said Diana man in the moon Ellen typewriter clicking Sarah • I try to finish Cheri tear-stained paper Diana lilac scent Sarah door framed in sticky notes Ellen as spring thaws, Cheri warm bread Sarah • a moonlit dance Diana his kiss Ellen he has the same love Cheri “look, mom” Sarah little girl’s smile Diana holding her child Ellen • so thankful— Cheri worn, dented wood Sarah I held my breath Diana “too young to be in love,” Ellen praying for her girls, Cheri summer's eve game Sarah • automatic tee-ball shooter: Diana toes in the grass Ellen my heart is so full Cheri dinner time Sarah too much fun Diana in each other's arms Ellen • summer vacation Cheri mom’s garden Sarah driving home Diana frost on the window Ellen the sunrise on the snow Cheri a wish for mom Sarah • • •

This Kasen-Renga was written by myself and my sister, and my mother and her sister, my aunt. Their maiden name was Anker. Since my sister and I take after my mother's side, when we are all together, we often refer to ourselves as the “Anker girls.”— Sarah E. Kisly |
