Growth Kasen

Growth

under the willow
their spot
is just hers now

their initials
faded

the restaurant
in Mississippi
our names carved

westward wind
your fingers slip from mine

alone together
under
the same moon

do you think of me
too?

the thoughts are worst
when I am alone
emptiness

eyes linger      realize
and flash back down

where the path ends
our foot prints
don't

sand squished between
my toes

seashells poke
the bottoms of my feet
splash

corral growing around
our suburban reef

my eyes
in the reflection of his
the moon on my back

the tides ebb
and pull

looking into the ocean
as vast
as your eyes

your smile
the scenery: gone

that summer:
when the sunflowers
bloomed eary

shooting up
new sprouts

Jimmy Johns
mayo on your face
first date

play-fight injury
I pretend not to feel

in the coffee shop
where we met
a cute new waiter

name and number
the back of a receipt

too much alcohol
throwing up on street
wipe with a receipt

my arms flop around
practically unattached

Sunday morning service—
Grandma's perfume
hides the tequila on my breath

nodding off . . .
preacher stares

eye connection
the middle of the sermon
a wink

seven digits
score!

stumbling
under a crescent moon
he walked me home

hands brush
always by accident

his best friend
a drunk, sloppy
kiss

suddenly her eyes
more green

stars that beckon
my thoughts wander
always to him

my heart's prayer
settles on the breeze

our love blossoms
as the lilies
open their faces to the sun

pollen clings to the bee
from flower to flower
