Singin' in the rain, ju—

. . . day ruined.

coming in from the rain—
I forgot
to shut my window

shoes laid out
next to the fireplace

spring storms—
when the daytime moon
needs a bath

in the bathtub
mother washes child

father returning

we pack up
the van
Road trip!

excited chatter
mom counts her children

Splat!
Nerf gun bullet misses . . .
and hits moon

she gives me
the evil eye

kids sleep quietly
in the back seat

hestitantly—we set our bags
a janky, highway motel

roaches everywhere
the taboo
smoke from her lips

tip-toeing past shards
of last night's mistakes

plowing deeper
into me
dry as a bone

coming in from the heat
welcome oasis

his wide arms
hold me close
keep me safe

I soak in the smell
of cologne and rain water

for him

sixth grade diary

senior prom
feelings remain
love still the same

In the glass bookcase

I hate Indian givers
I take that back

finally walking out
nowhere to go . . .
but anywhere

He said “get lost.”
So I did.

she stomps away
