Big Blue Year

by
Adam Peters

Haiku is an art of creating poetry that appeals to the senses and emotions. Haiku can be based on a wide variety of topics, and often associate a twist that is open to interpretation by the reader. This art can be structured and formatted consistently, or it can be free verse and completely unique.

I have thoroughly enjoyed expressing myself through the art of Haiku writing, and the following are representative of my first year as a Millikin student. The title is a play on words, as this has been a very difficult year for me and my family, one that I will never forget, but it has also introduced me to some lifelong friends. For this reason, these Haiku will cover a wide range of emotions, symbolic of my first Big Blue year.

I have enjoyed my time in Dr. Brooks’s Global Haiku class, and I hope that I can participate in other creative writing classes in the future.

For Lawrence J. and Robert K.

This collection is dedicated to two people who could put a smile on anyone’s face. We miss you both everyday and can’t wait to see you again.

child's embrace
I need him
more than he needs me

long shower
I figure it all out
                   homework

driving around town
the summer breeze
from the sunroof

last year's hero
this year's
waterboy

Christmas dinner
late arrival
but it isn't him

home alone
in the huge house
baby laughter

friends having fun
I sit down
on the bench

buzzer sounds
the crowd
does not exist

girls in the stands
I play
my heart out
