Within the Storm

cherry blossoms
I watch her
approach the picnic bench

I look at her hands and see
the folded up note

young school kids
passing messages
about their crushes

the bell rings
we race inside

clouds darken
the funnel touches down
in the silence, the moon.

within the storm
we find the calm

candle to candle
quiet for
a séance

we pass the torch around
my nervousness gets to me

my hand shaking
she does her best
to comfort me

Not what I was expecting
       bed shaking

The earthquake destroyed
everything.
Midnight tremors.

the young boy wakes
screaming for mom

shes holds her son
closer

police lights flashing
the crack in the curtain

They pass the house
Closed curtains conceal
terrible things.

but nothing comes out
