The Ole College Try

by
Deion Corley

I knew I loved to write poetry at a young age, but have always kept my writings close to myself. This course was tough at the beginning, but after realizing that haiku was something that you didn’t have to follow exact guidelines too, it began to get a little easier. The following collection of Haiku got it’s name from my semester of writing Haiku and turning them in, hoping for some type of positive feedback from my classmates. Some took off, and some didn’t. My Collection of Haiku range from normal college haiku, to a few nature haiku, and then to baseball haiku. The name of my collection fits well with the baseball haiku because I gave college baseball a try, but my schedule made it impossible. I hope that the readers will find my collection to be exactly what it is. A good college try at the art of writing Haiku.

long restless day
stop in for
a pint of beer

sun begins to peak
through the cloudy stream
rainbow trout

lost in
quiet conversation
radio static

waking up in time
to see the sun
ignite the ocean

footsteps before me
paving the way
through the snow

ocean wave
erodes our names
in the sand

iced over windshield
almost late for work
bent debit card

pair of thieves
robbing the offence
double play

the seams
toppling towards the batter
buckling curve

stepping into the box
she batters eyes
at the pitcher

seams of the baseball
leave their mark
on the pitcher's cheek

the left fielder
winks
at the opposing heckler

laying out
on the warning track
game saving catch

shallow fly ball
the ball lost
in the sun

the pitcher
takes a deep breath
no hitter
