Jake Cihak is a senior Human Services major at Millikin University graduating in May 2019. Jake has always been interested in poetry, but he had never experienced haiku prior to taking the Global Haiku class at Millikin University. He spent most of his time working at his internship (Heritage Behavioral Health Center), and these haiku were written as a form of therapy or release from the final stressful chapter of his undergraduate college experience.

yellow raincoat
she escapes
into the coffeeshop

Monday morning—
a soft nudge
from my feline friend

open windows
invite the spring breeze
the cat basks in the morning sun

tiny pebbles
always layer the bathroom floor
cat litter . . .

phone out of reach
3 missed calls, 6 new emails
nothing to say . . .

dirty snow
fallen on the ground
where’s the Narcan?

cat toys cover the floor
but she chases
a roll of toilet paper

reaching for
the last piece of bacon
she smirks

bullet holes pierced
the street sign—
swiss cheese
