Along for the Ride

by
Mason Bruce

Haiku is intended to evoke emotion and connect individuals to a memory or occurrence that has had an impact upon their life. Whether or not this has had a direct impact or makes one feel emotion towards others or objects they do so in both a positive and negative manner. The title, Along for the Ride, gives foresight into the randomness and individual thoughts that each haiku possess. The vast majority of which are not intended to cause confusion or an in-depth analysis to understand the message. As for many of the haiku are relatable to events that surround an individual growing up in a new millennium. I wanted to share some of my favorite haiku in a way that defines what and who I am as a person.

shotgun start
everyone scatters
in search of the golden egg

a kiss goodnight
turns into to something
I love you

wind whipping the branches
knock on the door
home alone

thinking of the way
to say this out loud
-I love you-

thrilled for them
until you realize
you’re the lonely one

playing ball
on a perfectly lined field
spring training

dancing in the dark
no one watching
my moves

running on empty
sunset in the distance
where am I

training wheels gone
all up to me—
look mom

taking a trip
down memory lane
old roads seem new

America’s favorite pastime
beer and a hot dog
on opening day

midnight drive
music blaring
my therapy
