Something New

by
Mikaela Vuglar

Haiku are often left up readers for interpretation. Authors attempt to evoke emotions or images within these short poems. A well written haiku takes two seemingly different thoughts and connects them in a short poem. Most of my haiku come from interactions I’ve had with people. Whether this be a good thing or a bad thing. Emotions such as longing and disappointment are easily portrayed in my haiku. Haiku about break ups are an easy topic to write about because most people can relate to them. My haiku about break ups have been based on my own personal experiences and those of my close friends. Other relationships such as friendships and new flames have also inspired a lot of my haiku. Being able to connect nature to emotion are some of my favorite haiku to read and write. When I can combine nature with loss, it is a successful haiku. I hope my haiku allow you to connect to them in some way.

highway at night
our song plays
I switch lanes

fresh highlights
replacing the hair
that belonged to you

snow day
recreating
an old recipe

enclosed by my winter coat
I slide passed
unnoticed

late night
i decide to slip
into something new

hesitant at my doorstep
my kiss
inviting you in

oak tree
leaves are falling
why are you holding on

in your rainstorm
I open
my own umbrella

a forgotten toy
becomes new again . . .
garage sale

forward fold
the perfect end
to sun salutation

late night
wondering what else...
is flammable

letting you in
one smile
at a time

neon lights fuel the night
always buzzing
just like you
