Global Haiku Tradition, Spring 2002

Spring Current

spring current
fish race
the canoe

     budding tree
     sips from the water

rain clouds
offer them an excuse
more running

     unraveled hose
     mother waters
     the lawn furniture

laying in the damp grass
she finds andromeda
by the moon

     dew on the baseball
     left behind

the coat
dries in the closet

     warm
     long line at the
     drinking fountain

shallow pool
children splash
their parents

     the tulip pokes
     through melting snow

he gives me flowers
i quickly
find a vase

     spring cleaning
     snow globe
     knocked to the floor

crescent moon
mood lighting over the lake

     puddles
     after splashing the policeman
     i drive faster

skinny dipping
he hides my towel

     buzzing mosquitoes
     over the swamp

apple blossoms
wind shakes petals
off the tree

     handing the teacher an apple
     the kindergartener
     peeks over the desk

spring fever
thirty tapping pencils

     swimming pools
     brother warns his sister
     of the shark

low tide
crab makes a run
for the water

     old seashells on the dresser
     old pictures at the beach

aging woman
heavy groceries
tear the bag

     the wind stopped
     sailboat stuck at sea

easter
crying baby
during the sermon

     through the window
     watching children
     flying kites

biking in the woods
trail splits
in two directions

     cool breeze through the window
     scary movie fades from memory

low full moon
the cat
lies in the grass

     sitting on the porch swing
     just noticing the sunset

running water
lulls her to sleep

     quiet snoring
     echoes
     cicadas

swaying tree branches
silent with
the window closed

     waving goodbye
     he drives away
     windows down

the scent of cherry blossoms
a spray of her perfume

     summer nightgown
     an extra blanket

warm bright sun
early summer morning
the smell of lilacs

     the alarm awakens me
     from my deep slumber

minutes pass by
the alarm
still buzzing

     finally I wake up
     and turn off the alarm

remembering last night
as I watched
the moon and stars

     breakfast
     cereal and orange juice

a warm shower
helps me wake up
for the long day ahead

     my appearance slightly changed
     razor and shaving cream

dress for success
a dress shirt
and a colorful tie

     the scent of lilacs
     from outside my window
     floods my senses

a baby rabbit
runs off in the distance
driving to work

     I stop and wait
     railroad crossing

through the car windows
I see the moon
fading in the sky

     hours of work
     finally a break

stomach growls
as I walk to the restaurant
for lunch hour

     the smell of fresh bread
     wafting from the counter
     makes my mouth salivate

the vase on the table
blossoms of fresh tulips

     plate of dessert
     served to another table
     catches my eye

finishing lunch
walking back to work

     flowers
     neatly planted in rows
     brightly colored garden

the secretary’s desk
fresh birthday bouquet

     afternoon
     the day
     slowly passing by

the clock
I watch it
as the hands tick

     leaving work
     I take my briefcase

new bird’s nest
in the tree
by the parking lot

     driving home
I get my mind off my work

favorite chair
feels so soft
I stretch out

     dinner cooking
     on the stove
     the aroma fills my home

through the window
the moon gradually appears
as the sky darkens

     an hour passes
     as I lose myself
     in a novel

early evening
becoming chilly
I wrap myself in a blanket

     turning on the television
     a rerun
     I know by heart

the stars outside
glow brightly in the sky

     bedtime snack
     before I brush my teeth

the scent of cherry blossoms
from the backyard
finds its way to my window

     lights turned off
     under the covers
     I begin to dream

Andrew Kirchgesner

spring morn
flutters and chirps
mud on my feet

     wet grass
     between my toes
     thorn

cool white sun
warm wind breezing

     tall evergreens
     shade provided
     by nature

blue sky
moon obscured
by the sun

     leaves roll
     car wheel spins
     earth revolves

I reel faster
the fish
leaps from the water

     soft splash
     I look
     nothing

baiting the hook
I cast my line
back into the water

     sirens
     interupt
     the silence

squirrels
surround my ankles

     the bell rings
     I jump up
     profesor still talking

moon spotlights
ravens stately walking
dead elm

     green picnic table
     brightly gleaming
     from the warm sun

squirrels chase
up the big oak tree

     beads of water
     still grace
     blades of grass

everywhere
small purple flowers

     dry leaves
     swirl
     'round spring blooms

church bells
tone the hour

     children's laughter
     yonder
     in the playground

my hands are dirty
weeds pulled

     garden-fresh
     I slice a
     tomato

hunting tomato worms-
mom and daughter fun

     morning dew
     soft ground
     the birds take advantage

a robin
hungry
searches for breakfast

     running through wet grass
     wanting
     the quiet brook

on and on I run
the treadmill
squeaks

     a clatter of toe-nails:
     my bunny
     hops with me

the sound of branches
breaking beneath my feet
in the moonlight

     wind howls
     chills down my back

summer's gone
snow on the ground
a still quiet covers the green

     alone on a sunny bench
     next to me
     a finch lights

beautiful weather
book in hand
homework forgotten

I breathe in the fresh spring air
as the leaves quietly rustle around me

dead blossoms
memories of him
I crush them

I step out of the water
     inhale deeply
. . . rebirth in the birds' song
