SERENITY
Selected Haiku

by
Nikki Garry

I am a junior Accounting major, thus I usually don't take writing courses, yet I thought that Global Haiku would be a fun and interesting course—which it has proven to be! (This was my first haiku course.) In general, I write about everyday simplistic things/events and from a Christian perspective. I attempt to write in a way that my readers will be able to relate to the moment I'm describing. I occassionally focus on nature and relationships.

I choose "Serenity" for my title because of its Christian connotations. The Serenity Prayer is as follows: "God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." And these are the things that are commonly seen throughout my work.

When writing haiku, I tend to focus on the following points:

o my Christian perspective
o past experiences or one’s imagination
o everyday events
o nature-related themes
o events readers can relate to
o the less punctuation, the better
o use of creative words

warm summer breeze
my feet peek
from beneath the sheets

endless night sky
all but one
modest star

the alarm sounds
blankets move
he awakens to a kiss

the potter
has His way
with the clay
