Nifty Findings:
Selected Haiku
by

Aaron Hill Bynum

Upon entering Dr. Brooks' Haiku Writing Roundtable course, my ability to write a decent poem or haiku was rather non-existent; which was mostly due to the fact that I only had extensive writing experience with essays and short stories. I wasn't what some would call a natural born poet.

Within time, what I had learned in Dr. Brooks' class ranged from haiku writing techniques to purposeful observations of literature. Thanks to his knowledge and understanding as a published author and as a publisher of authors, he was able to teach the rest of the class, as well as myself, the benefits of haiku writing from alternating perspectives, successfully.

home from school
still crying
she hugs my tighter

camping with the guys
we forgot the food
again

long ride home
dad smiling
the entire drive

seconds after burial
sunlight
on mother's grave

first snow
a wet tongue awaits
the ice crystals

in the rain
a red bird perches
on an old gutter

snow covered leaf
still blossoming
—she smiled

boy wonder
outstretched hand
touches the stars

still holding
the morning coffee—
her Valentine's Day mug

her footprints
still remain
alone on the beach . . .

all alone
i play our song
for us
